Whats Wrong with my Cakes?

Around the end of November i innoculated 8 jars following the classic pf tek instructions. Within 13 days there was fairly large circles of mycelium underneath the innoc. points, within 6 days the jars seemed to have an even layer of big overlaping circles of fuzzy looking white stuff, mycelium i assumed...its covering most of the vermiculite, but only very thinly, and by no means would the cakes be solid. They havent seemed to change since around the 16th of december...Whats wrong?

the speed at which the entire outside was covered in white makes me suspicious of cobweb but we'd need pictures to be sure.

sometimes they just stop growing.
if this happens (and you've tried the alternatives - adding sterile water, loosening the lid, turning upside down for a while etc.) you'll have to bite the bullet, birth and cut off the uncolonised bit. be really careful! spray lots beforehand, and spray the cleaned (good) portions with diluted H2O2. then go ahead as before. good luck!

Hmmm, well thanks for the replies everyone...cobweb was my first thought too...but kind of odd that it started so perfectly under the innoc. points. Anybody got a picture of cobweb in a jar?

I highly doubt you got cob web mold.
You might have a bacterial contam...or your jars stalled from the temps from your room. You should colonize your jars in a incubator at 81 to 84 degrees F. If your room temps are changing back and forth like some homes do...chances are your jars stalled. If you have a baterial contam the jars will have a sour smell to them. You might open one and take a wiff.
I suggest making a incubator.
good luck!

Well, oddly enough...since i posted this last night...the "mycelium" has gotten ALOT more solid, and actually looks like mycel. now....I just filled a bucket with a water, and put the jars in a lined ice cream bucket and put it in the water, which is kept at a constant warm temp by a heating pad underneath. The jars smell very mushroomy.
