St. Croix, Virian Islands

I'm heading to St. Croix in the Virgian Islands soon. I'm planning on doing some hunting. What could I expect to find there? Good and Bad? Thanks...

I'm no expert but........ I don't think anything good will come from hunting in St.Croix- I'm sure your best bet will be $$buying$$ not hunting

but i could be wrong- don't know

If you find some cow pastures, you could maybe find some useful Panaeolus cyanescens or Ps. cubensis...

Ive never been there, but, worth a try I guess...  :confused:

Yep, Copelandia and Panaeolus are synonymous. It all depends on what part of the world you're in, in America we call them Copelandia, elsewhere they're Panaeolus.

actually , i think Copelandia was a name that was invented in Hawaii ,but yeah ,same mushroom . somebody correct me if im wrong.

Donno about that, but, the hawaiian language does not contain the letters "C" and "D".

There are a lot of genus types in all aspects of classifications that are synonymous. Just depends on where you are in the world.

Hey i used to live there.

Well i know that there are cubes growing in the V.I.  I hope to find some when i go there next.  You need to go in the more rainier seasons or it will be to dry,  I dont know what season thier are having.  But i believe Paneolus will most likely be more common.  Good luck on your journey..........peace :wink:

Copelandia cyanescens was named and first identified as Copelandia cyanescens from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in the late 1800.

It has nothing to do with Hawaii.

There are 13 species of Copelandia ith psilocine and/or psilocybine in them. And there are several specias of Panaeolus which also contain psilocine and/or psilocybine in them.

But coming from Hawaii has nothng to do with the name Copelandia.

2. Panaeolus (Fr.) Quelet and Copelandia Bresadola species.
The genus Panaeolus is divided into three subgenera: panaeolina (Maire), Copelandia (Bres.), Anellaria (Karst), and Panaeolus (Fr.) Quel., which are determined by the spores (smooth or verrucose) and cystidia features (see Olah 1969,1970). Similar to P. cubensis and/or P. subcubensis, Copelandia species are also dung?inhabiting.

Copelandia species are known to occur in the tropics and neotropics of both hemispheres. According to Guzm?n (1989, pers. comm.), Copelandia species are considered to be a subgenus of Panaeolus, which includes at least 8 species (Weeks et al. 1979; Guzm?n 1978, 1988, Pers. Comm.). Pollock (1976) had amended this subgenus into sections which were originally separated by Ola'h (1968), who classified Panaeolus species into three catagories: psilocybian, latent? psilocybian, and non? psilocybian. Although some mycologists refer to the genus Copelandia, most prefer Panaeolus. According to Guzm?n, Panaeolus cyanescens (Berk. et Br.) Saccardo and Copelandia cyanescens (Berk. et Br.) Singer are the same fungi following two distinctly different taxonomic paths (Guzm?n, 1988. pers. comm.). In Southeast Asia, the recreational use of P. cyanescens (syn. C. cyanescens) has been noted from Java, Bali, and the Philippines (Emboden 1972; Schultes and Hofmann 1973, 1979; Ola'h 1970; Pollock 1976; Cox 1981; and Lincoff 1987, pers. comm.).
Ola'h (1968) identified three species of Panaeolus occurring in various areas of Southeast Asia: (1) P. cyanescens, (2) P. tropicalis Ola'h, and (3) P. cambodginiensis Ola'h & Heim. All three of these species are also common in the Hawaiian Islands (Allen and Merlin 1992a), and the latter has been reported from Colombia in South America (Pollock 1976).

Pollock (1976) also reported P. tropicalis as "fruiting in the dung of cattle and wild animals from Cambodia (Kampuchea)", and, along with Schultes and Hofmann (1973, 1979), Emboden (1979), and Cox (1981), referred to the sale and recreational use of P. cyanescens among tourists at festivals and ceremonies on the island of Bali.

Hey...GSAfarmer...did you ever go hunting on the island? Where did you find them? I have a couple buddies that grew up there and currently live there. We all know the island VERY WELL.
