If you are not ready to use whole grains yet and still want to use cakes then you may want to stop using that BRF.
I just performed a experiment with a couple types of flour/grains. First let me say, I have not got to fruiting yet, but I do have some results already. The cake tek I am using is the PF tek. For six 1/2 pint jars I used the standard PF tek. For nine 1/2 pint jars I used PF tek, but using wheat flour. For twelve 1 pint jars I used the PF tek with rye berries that I ground up using my blender. It is the 3rd day after innoculation. No signs of growth in the wheat or BRF, but in the rye berry jars there is already some growth. I will continue to post my results as they occur. But it already seems that Rye is the winner, although it is still early to tell.
Also the rye berries are cheaper to buy than BRF. $0.69/lb compared to $1.44/lb

Rye is popular among many of the growers here. Keep us posted on your results.

Of course rye berries are better. But they are near impossible to sterilize with out a pressure cooker.

I agree that rye berries are good - have a good friend who has great success with it. However, I just used the plain PF tek and my 1/2 pints had aggressive myc. growth by the end of the third day, and had completely covered the jar in less than 2 weeks. Both my cambodians and gulf coasts did this. Maybe it was just a freak occurence though...

I hear cambodians are fast colonizers. Gotta get a cambodian spore syringe one of these days.

Hello,
This has all been done before in Alien's Tek. He uses ground up rye berries plus a bunch of other ingredients which makes it better than the original PF Tek.
Good luck,

i've found dark rye flour to be more potent than brf and it doesn't require as much sterilizing as rye berries.
to whoever was asking... rye berries are the grain and the rye GRASS seed is for selocia or however its spelled (from mexicana strain)
