If anything, cobweb smells like a damp bathroom or musty basement. It is a form of mildew. Be careful sniffing contamination... it can be bad for you.

Fruity smell often means bacteria or yeast contamination.

Also, if it smells mushroomy then it is most likely fine.  I myself have never smelt the two in one jar.  Your gonna have to make a decisioin yourself.  You say mushroomy and fruity.  Hard to help you with that discriptioin.

Its gotta be your call.  Use good judgment, because a bacteria infested substrate can and will fruit.  If it is bacteria and it smells, isolate it to see if it gets worse.  Youll know it when its bad.

Also, weather your fimiliar with cobweb or not.  Its very obvious.  Can you guess why they call it cobweb?  It grows super fast too.  Can also asily be eliminated with treatment, so long you havent been ponding it for more than a few days

Keep an eye on those. . .fruity smell of a more grape-like kind often is pseudomonas. It doesn't look like the same sort of contamination as bacillus, but both are very motile and will rapidly spread. Fruity smells of the more apple-kind are more often bacillus.

Wanted to bump this. I currently am bulk fruiting and I know I have some bacillus bacteria infestation going on because it smells like apples, but I am going to try to fruit regardless. From everything I have read, as long as the actual mushroom itself isn't infected you have nothing to worry about right?

I really don't want to lose this batch...

Bacteria is rarely a contaminant of bulk substrates.  This has been covered many times in the 8 years since that thread died.  To get help, it takes more info on what you're doing.

That is the thread I started when this all began. I mistakenly injected a whole 10cc syringe into this one pound bag of spawn, when it only needed 2-4cc's. That yellow shit was a result, and it smelled like apples when i finally opened the myco bag. I decided reluctantly to add some hpoo compost to it and see what happened. Surprise surprise, now the whole thing smells extremely contaminated. It still colonized and is about to potentially start fruiting but I just don't want to risk my health.
