I use a microwave to sterilize my coir/verm casing material. Put the wet material in a covered glass bowl, nuke it for 5 minutes, give it a stir and nuke it for another 5 minutes.

A microwave is the best thing to use to sterilize something fast and completely. 5-10 min is good for a casing substrate.

When you say "nuke it", what temperature setting are you referring to? (I'm guessing high)

A casing layer on the bottom of the tray is always a good idea. Theres no increased risk for contamination as far as I know. As long as you put the container (if its metal) with the bottom layer in the oven and sterilize them like that, you should have no problem.

Sure there is an increase risk of contams, anytime you add material that can harbor contams there is an increased risk of conatms.  Also, since it is on the bottom, you can't even see contams if they do happen.

IMO, a bottom casing layer is not needed, and the way I see it, the less steps, the easier; the easier, the better.

What about the whole "nuking" thing? (see above post)

I've only nuked verm for a casing, and that was a one time deal cause it dried the hell out of my verm. But I don't see why a microwave can't be used if you could get the moisture content down right.

In reply to:

, sorry im just wandering how ill benefit from having a bottom layer??

Well stop wandering around and get to reading. hehe, sorry had to. The bottom layer can act as a water reservoir, for instance, if you overwater your casing, the water will collect in your bottom verm layer, and not in your substrate layer. Simple solution: DON'T OVER WATER.

Yeah, I meant the high setting.

I've never used a bottom layer in my casings. Seems unnecessary. Like the Skikid said, why go through extra steps?

I put my 50/50 in the oven inside an oven bag. Only pasturized it though. no contams yet.

The botom casing layer is good for extra moisture and to wick away the ooze created by the mycelium.
