self contained casing question

So I've been wanting to experiment with straw in a smaller version of one of the bulk teks and was wondering what purpose the black plastic covering serves when you're colonizing your spawn. Just about every tek does this and I was wondering why, and if I didn't do this what would the results be? I always assumed the plastic was so no light got to the mycelium but if this was the case wouldn't foil work just as well? Here's what I want to do:
-I want to get a rubbermaid container that's say about 12" tall and maybe 10" long 8" wide or somewhere around those dimensions.
-Cut a whole in the lid of the rubbermaid and tape suran wrap over the top for exposure to light.
-Put about 4-6" of pastuerized straw in the bottom of the container and spawn with whole grain brown rice.
-Cover Straw with foil. Poke a few holes in the foil and add some weight to compress the straw to speed up colonization.
-Case with 50/50 coir/verm after the straw has colonized.
-Fan a few times a day.
From what I've read and seen self contained casings are the way to go, and basically just wanted to know if this method would work? I don't know why it wouldn't but wanted some opinions of more experienced growers.

I dont see how that is a self contained casing seeing as how you still have to fan it and mist it etc. Yes your setup would work. The cover for the bulk substrate is to hold in humidity and heat so incubator settings are simulated.
Wait is that what they mean by self contained? Not putting it into a incubator but rather covering it with something?

I saw them called self contained casings in other people's posts. I believe they were calling them self-contained because they hold their own humidty therefore not needing a terrarium. I had also thought that I might put a fish tank bubbler in a pvc pipe filled with water and peroxide going down into the substrate accompanied with a few polyfill filled holes in the side of the container to reduce or eliminate the need for fanning. I thought the bubbler might create too much humidity though.

For a casing? Yeah probably, I recomend you put in some vermiculite or a casing medium.

Well the point of what I wanted to do is to eliminate the terrarium, thus eliminating the need for perlite or verm for humidity. Like I said I just wanted to do a smaller version of a bulk tek. Like a bulk tek that only produces say an ounce or two dry. I've done casings in a terrium and they're ok, but I'm looking to simplify my growing methods. The bulk teks look great but I wouldn't know what to do with the quantities of mushrooms they produce.
