In need of a creative solution....
    #1174586 - 12/28/02 04:10 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

After sterilizing all of my jars last night, I looked at them this morning and i think that i put too much water in the substrate. the substrate looks clumpy. kind of like oatmeal. is there a way at this point in the process for me to dry out the substrate? this may take some creative thinking. thanks!

the only way i can see u saving your jars is to take the tape off the holes for about 2 or 3 days at around 86 degrees sterilize again with tape and then inoculate. the incubation for 3 days at 86 degrease should dry the substrate a little. then when you get mycelium growth the water content will start to decrease

Did you do the PFTek - 1/2 pinters? They get 1/2 cup of water, pretty straightforward. Hmmmm, when you sterilized, did you put aluminum foil over the tops of the jars to prevent water from getting in?

all this talk of fine vermiculite requiring more water psyched me out. i began with 1/4 cup of water per jar, but it looked dry. when i finished adding water it was probably more like 1/3 cup per jar. i did have aluminum foil on the lids. what will happen if inoculate the jars as is?

If it is too wet it is doubtful that your spores will germinate. Your best bet is to chuck what you've got and start over.

Did you inject spores yet? I'd say if you didn't inject spores in the jars yet to start over. If you did, you may be able to dry them out a little by replacing the lids with coffee filters or micron filters. You will most likely get some contams though unless you are very clean carful and lucky. Any other method I can think of will kill spores.

Best of luck. AWG

Just re read the thread, duh. Start over. Sorry, it's shitty news, but in the long run it will be faster to start over than to try to nurse what you have now. Follow the Teks to the letter for measurements. Trial and errror from dedicated growers have established working recipies. Read all the PF style teks you can find and look for common values, this is a good way to learn the basics. (I am learning myself)

I bet they are fine and you are over exagerating. Mine always look kind of clumpy, if you are very worried you can put them into your incubator and try to dry it off a bit I guess.
