First attempt

Hey everyone, I have questions about my first attempt here.
I'm gonna go with the PF tek first, see how things go and get all the things I need to know down. With this, I see some people crumble down their cakes and case them, is this something someone new should be attempting?

if you don't have a pressure cooker but you really don't want to do cakes then you can do that.
but if you are worried about yeild then that is not a good reason to want to do a casing. it isn't easier

I don't understand what you are saying here...
I have a pressure cooker... so what are you suggesting?

I've searched everywhere for some Rye Berries in my area, but they are unavailable unfortunately, and I'm trying to limit my transactions over the net. Do you have another suggestion? I see many people having success with WBS. That is def. available to me.

Yeah, I already did all that man. I promise you, I haven't found anything in my area. Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Lowes, Wally World... nothing. =\ which sucks 'cause I know how successful it has been for people.

LoL I haven't got to start them yet, I was just wondering if the whole casing is something a noob should attempt on his first try. It wouldn't affect my yield?

If I did happen to find some Rye Berries, then casing would be essential? I think I just found a location that carries it, which I will be calling tomorrow.

Rye berries can be found in most health food store. If they aren't out on the shelves in the store, then I'm sure they would be more than happy to order you a bag.
RGS or rye grass seed is probably even more widely available and definitely cheaper. Literally every hardware store or garden center should carry grass seed.
If you have a pressure cooker, then grain (berries or grass seed) is the best way to go. Once you have your colonized grain, the best thing is to spawn it to one of the common bulk substrates. Casing straight grain or crumbled PF cakes just isn't worth it.

depends what species you're growing. casing is not neccessary for cubensis regardless. some say casing doesn't make a difference and some say it helps... but it's not enough for it to be the standard.

I must be dumb... There is a difference between Rye Berries and RGS? They have looked identical to me. LOL!

Very misleading, then... :P

i guess i shouldn't have said the "same thing" but they do look and work very similar. the berries would be the superior but can be hard to find locally for some (like myself). many who can find them get them from health stores because they are used in foods. rgs is the seed used to plant grass so for that you could check gardening and hardware stores. many times it won't be labeled as RYE GRASS SEED so you have to read the labels carefully and make sure rye is there.

So if I call around and ask for GRASS SEED, and they have it... then go look for Rye Grass Seed on the bag? Maybe that is... mostly my problem. LOL! And I'm gonna call around to some local health stores and ask if they carry Rye Berries, I didn't know there was a difference like that. Wow... Thanks. Haha

But really it wouldn't be obvious to anyone except someone who grows mushrooms themselves. The general public kinda has NO idea how mushrooms grow. Grain? They'll just think you're baking organic bread or some other stuff. And if you told someone at a health food store that you grow edibles, they'll want to become your best friend.

i've lived in a half dozen cities since i started my amatuer mycology streak and all of them had rye grain available.
now i just order it because it's cheaper to order (including shipping) then it is to buy at a health food store.

I was talking about transactions over the internet. Buying a syringe (psilocybe, in particular), rye grain, and other mushroom growing supplies all over the internet, getting them shipped to my house... that, to me, is what would throw up a red flag. Oh, of course if I find it somewhere local and I can pay cash for it, I would just say I'm growing edibles, or I'm in a mycology class and need supplies for research. That's not a problem at all.

I wish I knew what you do, 'cause I've had a ridiculous time trying to find supplies locally.

I get my grain at Native Sun health foods for $1.48 a lb. I just take in a bucket that holds 40 pounds and they gladly go in the back and fill it up for me. Those people are healthy and happy. Online I find it for the same price, but shipping is usually $20 extra.
And plus, it's not like you're going to order syringes every day. After one good grow, you can make prints and trade for other 'strains'.

you can make syringes from prints - they're so easy

Yeah, I'm gonna attempt that, as well as the whole LC thing when I cross that bridge. I was also seeing that grain to grain spawn, which seemed pretty interesting to me as well. I'm just tryin' to get settled into a successful grow and see my rights and wrongs before I try and bite off more than I can chew.
