You all seem to be pretty knowledgeable...
    #11741547 - 12/30/09 04:31 AM (15 years, 21 days ago)

My 1st grow is going to be with pf tek, but I am using popcorn as a substrate(popcorn tek). I am heating my fruiting chamber with a heating mat. I am heating my incubator with a fish tank heater/ tub-in tub-method.

moisture will be provided to my fruiting chamber through the perlite method i.e. keeping the perlite saturated. I will also use a fish tank pump, an air-stone and a beaker of water to also add humidity to my chamber.

A full spectrum Fluorescent (not a cfl) Light will be set for 12/12 on a timer which is glued on my cooler.

I am going to wire a cellphone charger to a computer fan, and hook that up to a timer.

What would be an ideal timer setting for a fan? What exactly do I do with the substrate to "case" it? What do I mix the popcorn with? Vermiculite? Is a heating mat the best way to heat, or should I make two tub-in-tubs and use one for an inoculation chamber and one as a fruiting chamber?

I can't use Martha Tek because it is too big.

Do some more research. Popcorn tek and PF tek are not the same thing. You dont want to heat your FC.

The 2nd fruiting chamber is an outdated design, as it has a drip shield which is not necessary, you actually want to mist your cakes directly. As already stated, you also don't want a heating pad under your fruiting chamber unless it gets really cold where you're setting this up, but if you keep the room at room temperature you should be good without.

You can make a shotgun fruiting chamber or a PMP quite simply. Both are pretty inexpensive and very effective.

One of our mods RR made a good video demonstrating how to build a shotgun terrarium and also explaining how it works.

Watch part 3 here:
http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek

I recommend you watch all videos there, and read the text because it's really useful info, but part 3 shows how to build the shotgun terrarium. Basically the moist perlite keeps the RH (relative humidity) up, and the holes provide most of the FAE (fresh air exchange) you'll need. You'll need to lift it up with something (RR recommends 4" pvc fittings) to allow airflow underneath. If you decide to go with a shotgun you will need to fan it out occasionally throughout the day, though this can be done with the terrarium lid, and you will need to mist the cakes a few times a day, so it's not entirely automated.

This albino tray was fruited in a shotgun terrarium:
:

A PMP, especially one built right is far more automated, though it's more expensive than a shotgun (which really only requires perlite, a tub, and a light source) because it requires an air pump, tubing, air stones, lava rocks or geolite, your tub and your light source.

This is the basic way to make it:
http://www.shroomery.org/9047/Poor-Mans-Pod

I did about this but I found a high power pump with four outlets. Two go to these 36" flexible bubble wands that zig zag along the length of each side, one outlet goes to a 5 inch airstone disc in the center, and one tube runs above my lava rocks below the rack I set trays and cakes on, and has small holes poked throughout basically just shooting air up at my cakes and trays. The pump constantly aerates the water which provides a high RH, and it's constantly pumping air in which provides FAE. I drilled a few holes on the top to let air out.

A diagram of my setup:

I like this better because I don't have to fan and mist unless I want to.

This guy was put in there 2 days ago after it started pinning in the bag:

This tray is also doing really well in there, considering it's growing off of wood:

As for your popcorn cakes, I don't have any experience using popcorn but I can't imagine the myc will fruit very well, or produce a good enough yeild off just popcorn. Watch the other videos I linked you to on how to do PF tek, or rye grain and bulk substrate, and read up a lot before you do anything. What works for some people doesn't for others.

Yah, choose either PF tek or pop corn spawned to coir, don't mess up those two, I'd recommend PF tek, it's simple to learn and less chance for contaminations. It's possible to fruit also pop corn cakes, but you'll not get as much fruits as with other methods.

And don't warm your FC and please don't use that many timers and automations. This is my personal opinion, I know many people use them but my heart is aching when I see someone planning that kind of automated care-taking for his beautiful little babies :frown:. They should be caressed with loving hands, not with machines :yesnod: :heartpump:

You must not have found these yet.  Watch these 4 brf tek videos and then you'll know just what to do to get started.  It appears you've been searching as one should, but you've come up with some long outdated designs.  Good luck.

I've definitely found that shotgun terrarium is the way to go if you're using cakes. Otherwise I'd suggest just going straight to bulk and monotub, it seems a heck of a lot simpler than PF cakes. Tub-in-tub is still a good incubator if your room is too cold and you can't heat it.

Thank you all for the responses! You all are very knowledgeable!

Okay, so shotgun terrarium.... Hmmm?

I do need a method to heat my mushrooms. My room is freezin'!

Therefore:

My question is easy
and its directed to you.

I cant get the right temps
so what should i do?

Will a heating pad work for my incubator?
And what about my innoculator?

My room is still freezing.
My nose might turn blue.

The shotgun terrarium tip
was helpful.

I read it all, too!

With a nod and a wave
I bid thee thanks and adiu...

p.s. what is the youtube link for the bf tek video, the website you gave me will not load.

space heater. You just need to heat the air of the room, not the terrarium. If the terrarium's temperature is greater than the air around it, condensation will build robbing the humidity and moisture.

If it wont kill you it wont hurt the mushrooms. Cold air just slows down the growth and makes them denser. So its a good trade. My room gets very cold too.
