Don't call, go in person. And don't ask for 'coir'. Go look for reptile bedding.

I get mine from Petco if you have one of those around. I get these three packs for like $9. But I get this brand. And yeah, I never had anyone tell me they had this stuff even when asked directly for it. Most people don't even know what it is.

It's a part of the husk. But don't even get into that- you want a brick (or three) of reptile bedding.

yup...people still won't know what it is. I can only find it around here at Petco. I personally go into all the pet stores to try to find it at other places but can't. Petco is the only one around here. I can't even find it on their website. The brand I posted is called Zoo Med. Try asking for that...if you must ask someone. But it's in the reptile and hermit crab substrate section of the store.

I wouldn't get anything other than the compressed bricks, but out of the links you posted, I would go with the first one. I see the stuff in the second link as the store too. You DO NOT want that stuff. It looks like wood chips and it big and bulky. You want the fibers. It has some long stringy stuff but is mostly powdery like dirt. (kinda)
I found it! This is the shit you want to buy. (When in doubt use the shopping tool in Google) http://www.petco.com/product/10813/Zoo-Med-Eco-Earth-Compressed-Coconut-Fiber-Expandable-Substrate.aspx?cm_mmc=CSEMGooglebase-_-Reptile-_-Zoo%20Med-_-905771&mr:trackingCode=046E1416-8381-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA

I haven't checked on ebay. That's not a bad idea.
They also carry bulk bails of this shit at hydroponic stores too. I have never gotten any there as there isn't a hydroponic store within 60 miles of here.

I'm not sure what a bail works out to, but it's more than ten bricks. 1.50 bucks vs. 5.00

I worked in the reptile industry for years and I have found most employees have no idea what products the store they work at carries. Always go in yourself as it is a common product that is almost always in stock. Especially try reptile speciality stores as they tend to sell very large bricks at a discounted price. MM

So I went to the Hydro shop to grab some verm and coir. The smallest brick of coir they had was 11L. How much of this am I going to need for 1 monotub? I was planning on using 1 brick but this is a BIG brick. I was thinking like 1/3rd of it?

Sup bro?
Well, coir is one the cheapest thing u will find it at a garden center, it's coconut shell dust. Just look harder and u will find. Well, at least here in Brazil i can find in almost every garden center. Good luck.

Flake off chunks of the big block. A 'brick' is about 22 ounces worth.

Well, you will get better results faster if you measure it somehow instead of guessing. $5 kitchen scale would be fine. But it's up to you.

Sounds good, If my math is right I should be bang on 7.5L finished +1L verm + 1L Coffee 9.5L total + 5L spawn. Sounds about right to me. Let you know how it goes.
(Mental note next time cut the brick with a skill saw not an exacto knife) (HOLY SNAP THAT IS TUFF STUFF)

Well let me tell you how bad I messed up. lol I didn't really realize how much this stuff was going to expand until it was too late. I cut off 1/8th of the brick and put it into 4L of water and within about 1 min It sucked up all the water and filled the pot to the brim. :O I stirred it around a bunch then dumped it into a 15L tote and mixed in (premix of 1L of verm 1L spent coffee) Mixed that around a bunch and put the lid on the tote. I am now waiting for it to cool down it is really hot my arm was starting to sweat when I was stirring above it lol. I don't think I messed up the sub I just messed up by not realizing that I was making more than I could hold in the pot. Think it will be ok?
