sorry if this sounds dumb but does anybody think this will work?
    #11736704 - 12/29/09 11:12 AM (15 years, 22 days ago)

so after getting used to jars and sterilizing in a pot i want to try to experiment a little with microwave sterilization. but instead of using jars i want to try a ziploc bag. i will be using the RR method of substrates dump that into a bag seal the bag, put  another ziploc bag around that and seal that one, that way no moisture can escape and i heard 6-8 minutes is sufficient for sterilization. any thoughts?

the only way it would explode if there was a pressure difference and the microwave would all be the same temp so there would be no reason it would explode

Would it all be the same temp?  Microwaves work by exciting H2o molecules, .: moist substrate gets hotter than relatively dry air, no?

I would think the bags would melt before they went kaboom... I dunno though, never tried putting ziplock bags in the microwave.

...just get a pressure cooker and some jars or bags... I found my first pc for like 30 bucks.

You forgot about the expansion of water as it moves from liquid to gas. Figure out a way to put a filter patch on, and you may have a somewhat viable option.

I don't think this will work well (at all) with grain, but may for BRF.

By pouring near boiling water (water begins to boil at 212 degrees) into the bag, or putting the bag into the water, the plastic could begin to melt

...Personally, I wouldnt try it, especially for the amount of time you would need to keep it in the microwave

sounds like youre taking the sterility aspect of mush growing pretty seriously:rolleyes:

did you not read my last post? dont use a ziplock bag in the microwave man. :spank: use an oven bag with a filter patch if your hell bent on microwaving a bag

Plastic that will not melt in the pc or microwave too readily will have a #5 rating
I have done microwave sterilization with an old tek for casing but I don't do it any more. But that is what I used to contain it.
You should just a pc though with jars.

I've done the same and "sterilization" in a microwave usually results in contam for me. I agree with the others, might as well get a PC or a big pot at the least to produce some magic.
