So my uncased monotubs has been fruiting for about 2 weeks and its starting to slow down, I pulled off a big fruitbody and a large chunk of sparcely colonized substrate came off with it revealing the layer underneath it was 100% colonized.
Last time I had this happend to a monotub I literally took it to the kitchen sink and scrubbed the entire top layer of sparcely colonized hpoo off and in two weeks it was fruiting again, I know how people would advise against that but it was more of an experiment than anything and it turned out wonderfully, in all honestly I used a bit of dawn dishwashing soap with it too and it didn't seem to hurt anything.... Myc is tough stuff. It fruited for months after that operation.
Long story short would I improve the colonization of the top layer if I late cased it, my tubs always seem to pin prematurely right about 95% colonized, probably too high humidity or something.
Im thinking about using a casing mix.

Field capacity pasteurized Miracle Grow Moisture Control has worked very well for me in the past as a casing layer in a monotub.
You can even put it in a plastic tub with loose fitting lid and microwave it. Stick a candy thermometer in the center between microwaving periods and confirm soil reaches 170 degrees, then maintain with a 1 minute burst every so often to maintain for 1 hour and you are done.
