colonized substrate too wet......what to do?
    #11737151 - 12/29/09 02:36 PM (12 years, 23 days ago)

hi guys and gals,
i have a tub going right now that is acting funny. this is my firt time using coir and so far with the same coir (that i thought was at field capacity) i have gotten a tub that was too dry (lost that one) and this one which is too wet. it is fully colonized so i set it out to fruit on dec 23rd  (six days ago) and it seems to have stalled. it looks exactly the same as when i set it out only it is very very moist. there are beads of water all over the substrate and practically dripping off the lid.  is this tub still salvagable?  and if so how do i fix this?    thank you.

pics?

by the sound of it, youve just got some excess moisture sitting on the surface of your sub, which is pretty normal, its from the high humidity and misting (if youve been doing any).  if your sub was over hydrated, it would have taken forever to colonize/wouldnt colonize. just fan your tub with the lid every once and a while if you think theres too much moisture in the tub, or put a little less polyfill in the holes so more air can pass through.

btw, to tell if your bulk sub is at field capacity, grab a small handful and squeeze it.  only a few drops should come out.  If it is too wet, you can hand squeeze the water out (which is a PITA ha) and if its too dry add some boiling water

thats what i thought. i thought that when i put the polyfill in to allow for FAE that most of the moisture would dry but alas...no.

If it's fully colonized, just open it up and fan it out. And post some pics.

If a tub that you put into fruiting conditions six days ago has not dried out, then this is a strong condemnation of whatever fruiting conditions you have set up. Lots of fresh air exchange will cause evaporation, which is a fruiting trigger, and this must be replaced with misting. If you haven't been misting and your substrate is still soaked then you MUST increase FAE. Take the polyfill out for a few days and see how they do.

Keep dabbing still looks like youll be alright, dont let water pool on the surface, if you see water pooling use less polyfill or turn up the power on  your fan or increase the amount of time your fan runs, your holes look odd btw.

If you are supposed to use that much polyfill, then I'm doing something wrong.

Am I the only one who LOLed when they looked at those pics?

..lateraliskitty, take some of that polyfill out, even if its not tight there is no reason for that much, all your doing is taking up precious space for the mushies!
