water content 50% by weight?

should the water content be 50% by weight for all grains or just rye? does different substrates need different amounts of water (if true what WC does popcorn need?)

i would prefer the answer in ml/g's of water then someone just telling me to simmer for an hour then pressure cook :smile: gracias

Different for each grain, and each batch of grain. Stamets describes how to calibrate this in TMC.
But you'll get better results if you use a soak, simmer, strain method like the one shown here: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Grain-Preparation

Yup. I get really consistent results with RR's grain method. I just have to modify the drying procedure and lay the grain out on a towel laying on a flat surface. I had trouble with drying grains for the longest time until I started laying them on a towel...they just don't seem to dry any other way, at least efficiently.

I found a wire strainer works better than a plastic one, dunno why.

im trying to get the water content correct by weighing the grain before and after soaking and pc'ing (simmering if popcorn)

i remember rye being 50% water content but what about popcorn and rice? anyone know?

Exactly. Weigh it dry, then weigh it properly hydrated, and the difference gives your conversion factor.
