Birdseed - Soak or not soak?
    #1173556 - 12/27/02 10:15 AM (14 years, 26 days ago)

for those who use birdseed, do you soak the seed before pc'ing (how long)?

anno's tek at fungifun makes no mention of soaking, just put the seed and water in the jar and PC. but some folks say that they soak up to 24 hours first.

does the possibility of a fungicide on the seed make a difference?

opinions? thanks!

I use penningtons wild bird seed. I choose to saok b/c I feel it gives the best water to to seed ratio. The stuff I use has "bird coat" on it so to ensure that the birdcoat is totally gone I rinse my seed a couple of times after it has been soaking. I find that soaking overnight gives the best results. Oh yeah be sure you strain for a good 30 min to an hour.

cool. so you soak, strain for a long time and then fill jar? do you add any additional water? do you use polyfill or some other filter?

I was using a filter patch that I purchased online then I started using polyfil. Polyfil was just easier for me to get ahold of and alot less expensive. I do not add any more water after I strain. Just strain and then fill the jars. It has worked PERFECT everytime.

if u soak any seed and let it stay there for more than one day (i leave them 2 days until there is some bubbling inside the jar) all endospores would grow to bacteria which are so easily killed in the pc, so you have 100% a healthy jar, no contaminations.
