Contam on a BRF cake already in FC?
    #11732301 - 12/28/09 03:25 PM (15 years, 23 days ago)

This cake has been sitting in my fc for about 3 weeks it has given off some early fruits and I noticed a few more that the vials had broken on so I took a closer look. They are pretty small but the color of them is a little off. I also noticed this dark bluish green puff right above them on the cake. Any Ideas, am I just paranoid?

not good isolat and finnish if you want or just throw out. you might want to change the perlite to if it has been there a while

It looks like bruising, but you seriously need to learn to focus the camera on the spot you want us to look at.  Try again.

It looks as if during a flush a little bit of the fruit body was left on the cake. It looks like bruising that is starting to rot a touch, but it may just be the pics.
Stand further away from the cakes zoom in and post those pics.

Ok man, well just in case I made a 5 min FC out of a 2L pop bottle and a bowl. Scooped out the perlite from around where the cake was and used that in the bowl and then put the pop bottle over top and pushed it into the perlite If it starts to look worse I am gonna toss it just to be safe. Did those mushrooms look a little discolored? I thought they had a bit of a green tint to them... been pretty good at sterility and not getting contams so far so I would like to keep my winning streak going. But if this does start to grow and look worse should I toss out the mushrooms I got off it before because this is the one that started fruiting really fast and was also the fastest colonizing Jar. I didn't notice this little spot until 2 days ago and it hasn't seemed to change at all since then. I haven't smelt any weird smells or anything. If it is a contam tho what do you think it would be? I thought fully colonized cakes didn't have a chance to contam because the mycelium was already "In charge" of the cake and wouldn't let the bully's play. lol

Looks like bruising. bruising isnt always blue, it can look a disgusting green colour aswell.

Mold is obvious, it looks like coloured sand ontop of the mycelium where as bruising is the colour of the mycelium itself.

This just looks like when you bump your arm on something and you get a bruise and it is like green and blue and really dark. So everyone thinking it's ok then? I just don't wanna eat any mold. Lol. Is it possible for a fully colonized cake to get a contam?

So I am pretty sure this thing is ok now I just harvested some fruits from another cake and that I have touched quite a bit and it has the same looking stuff on it in a few places.

Ok to eat?

I can tell by the color of your caps that they are too wet. I picked some today that looked EXACTLY like that and its because I'v been misting some cakes next to my casing and my casing has been getting way too much water on it. Your fine. That would explain the bruising on your cake.  Which to me its obviously bruising.  Let the caps dry and they will turn normal again. Your fine just maybe take it easy on the misting.

Ya I mist the heck out of it. I have to many holes in my fc I went nuts with the drill. There are about 300 holes in it lol. So I mist ALOT to keep the RH up above 90% otherwise it is at like 60% I will slow down on the misting I usually mist till it is damp in there. I will just maybe do 5 sprays into the fc and then let it sit a second and then fan.

u know what man my first FC was exactly the same. I went crazy with the holes and had to mist alot too.  Do your self a favor. get a new tub and measure the holes this time. 1/4 inch holes 2-3 inches apart ( i did 3 inches) now im getting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more fruits than i did before.  I made myself feel like an idiot with my first FC.  Anyway get a new one and do it right. You'll be glad you did. i sure as hell was!

i mist 3 times a day. also if you get your stuff to wet just fan it until the water evaporates off your mushies.  It happens quick.  Droplets of water on them are ok so long as they get fresh air. but i'v found that when they get big they dont really like to me misted as often if at all.

Yeah I think I might put down another $10 for a new FC. I need to re-wet the perlite anyway it is getting alittle dry because of the holes. Maybe I will do that Tomorrow. I just built my monotub today and I was gonna grab an extra tote but I didn't (smacks head).
