Casing - Is it too late?
    #1173144 - 12/27/02 05:25 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

If I had a few jars that were beginning to pin, would it be too late to case them (verm)? Or could I just remove the pins and case it anyways?

That didnt answer my question :\
I like the yields of standard casing anyways.

heres a quote from derralyd

"Once a jar begins pinning invitro it is a waste to case it, you will end up wither harvesting some pins or just leaving them in the casing which would eventually possibly cause contamination."

i disagree with part of that statement.

the consensus is that casings produce better flushes and more fruit by weight. so what's picking a few pins before casing? the pins will not use any more nutrients, but the rest of the fruit will so nothing is lost. the benefits of casing outweigh any possible "issues" with picking pins.

but of course pins should be removed before casing to prevent rot and contams.

i havent had much experience with growing but i know what ive read, seems to me that casing and cakes provide the same yields if done right. BUT if u do bulk, such as poo u get more yields. mushrooms grow until nutrients are gone- verm has no nutrients just provides a protective barrier from contams, and keeps mositure in.

Just let it pin and case it after the first flush.

Sorry but that is quite the false statement. A four cake casing will provide a much larger mycelium network, increasing the yield over a single cake.

That statement of mine was originally used in a different context.
I believe that if you were to pick those mushrooms off and then case the grain that it would still flush fine but could possibly contaminate due to immature mushrooms that begun forming invitro that you didn`t pick.
When you get to the point that you realise the nature and value of a grain jar you quickly realise that if a jar begins pinning invitro, rather leave it and let it pin invitro or fruit it as a cake.

When I originally made that statment we were talking about most teks that suggest letting jars form primordia or begin invitro pinning when birthing them as cakes not casings.

I would chalk the jar up as an experiment and either let it continue fruiting from the jar in which case I`d cover the jar with tape and let it fruit as a casing from the jar opening.
Or I would birth the cake and let it fruit.
You choose.

Also if you have one pin on the cake then casing it won`t make much of a difference. But if it`s covered in pins then you might consider what I have said.
The chances of you touching the cake without causing a contamination down the line are quite big.
Anyway, use it don`t use it.
There are soo many options when growing mushrooms that one person's input is merely one choice available.
I would experiment and learn from experience. That way anything you come across is going to teach you something.
