Aquarium heater
    #11731552 - 12/28/09 01:03 PM (15 years, 23 days ago)

Hey, ive been cultivating cubensis for about 3 weeks now, and myc growth is at 50% :frown: I am using an aquarium heater and TiT method. However, although the heater claims to keep a "constant temperature", i have found that when i dip my hand in the tank its about 10c, even though i set it to 32c. If i unplug the heater and reposition it, then switch it non, the ON light comes on, and it heats for some time. Sometimes when i check the tub its warm, sometimes its cold. I don't understand, but the heater definitely doesn't maintain a stable temp. It just seems to switch off whenever it wants.

My question is. Should i get a water pump to get the water pumped around?
Maybe the heater is just measuring the temperature by its thermostat. Or is this an issue witht the heater. Can anyone suggest a better method. I don't see this heater working for fruiting. Ive thought about getting a space heater, but i can't spend a lot of money as im currently unemployed.

use a space heater, a blanket,or the top of your fridge if your house is below 60f

i doubt it is.

TiT are crap.

A water pump will just complicate the picture, and it's always best to keep things simple.

One option is just to heat the room to a comfortable level and let them colonize at room temp. It will take longer but they will do it.

I've seen TiT work before several times. With a 100W aquarium heater in an 18 gal tub, the temp inside the dry tub was 80°F consistently.

Like Citizen said, electric blankets work pretty well, too. They use less electricity than a space heater if you're in a large room.

i had the same prob when i started i got the 50watt one from walmart then took it back and got the 100w (did the old walmart swap bought the 100w and put the 50w in the 100w case then took it back looks the same) but i digress... even though ppl say TiT is shit my house is always cold and i have the incubator in my tool room(not heated) the thing works great room temp around 55f-60f all the time. TiT stays at abt 75f which i think is perfect. as for the 3 weeks that is about right for a MS injection just be patient and wait for it to do its thing. pm me for any ?s

Ive been told that TiT is the superior low cost method when you're starting out. To be honest, 50% of the time i open my tub and im like "ooohh yeaa.. florida temperatures mid june.. mm", and then other times.. im like: "gah! jut feels like my house". Part of me is thinking about a space heater. My room is 10ft x 10ft and not particularly well insulated. With regards to an electirc blanket, do i put the jars inside it, or do i place the blanket around a tub?

Finally, can anyone provide me with some pros and cons of using heating mats?

heating mats and electric blankets are bad. the direct heat will not suffice for mycology purposes.

get a space heater. it costs 15 dollars for a small one and will easily heat your room.

or just put a regular blanket over the tub and utilize the natural heat myc produces while its growing..

a TiT is not trustworthy, tempermental, and unnecessary.

how cold is your house exactly?

anything over 60-65f will be fine, you will just get a little slower growth than 70-75f

WOW.

yeah a blanket won't suffice then

maybe put a blanket over the tub they are incubating in, and then shine a light (not a cfl or any other light that is cool to the touch) on the tub.

a heating mat in a closet NEAR but not touching the tub might also work.

i never was able to get my TiT to work, but that was like 6 years ago so maybe they have more reliable fishtank heaters.

the ones in my fishtank work great, but for some reason when i invert them and try to use them for TiT purposes, the heat fluctuates or sometimes doesnt even work at all.

I think i  might try a pump. Because, i find in the spot near the heater, its warm, but its not warm at the other side.

I wish i lived somewhere where temps were 70f+ :frown:
