I read somewhere on here that salt tests are useless. I believe RR posted that. Just stick with the wrapping the hygrometer in a wet towel for 30 min and calibrate it then.

I think that the salt test would be more prone to incorrect readings than a wet towel. I've never had great luck getting accurate readings from a hygrometer and simply go without one.

You can thank walmart shoppers for the lack of quality available these days. They only care about the cheapest possible price with no regard for quality. A few years ago we could still get decent hygrometers for $10. Now, they've all gone out of business and all you can get are made in china copies for $5, but they're total shit.
If you do manage to find a decent one at a cigar shop, don't use the salt test. It calibrates for the mid 70% range. The damp towel test calibrates for 99% which is much closer to what you'll operate at. RR

I've seen some Colibri [sp?] brand hygrometers on ebay that are made in Germany. They might fit the bill. Around 20ish bucks shipped.

Anyone got any input on the masons hygrometer mentioned? Quote:
suicide said: I use a couple of these in my greenhouse. They work great! Very accurate!

That seems like exactly what we would want besides maybe a little slower on readings than the cheap amazon analog always posted in hygrometer threads. I get lots of temp fluctuation so i'm not sure how accurate it would be but it seems like a great solution to the never ending hygrometer discussion.

its not going to give you the same reading you were doing 2 different tests
take it and wrap it in a moist towel for 1 hour if it doesn't say 100% adjust it so it does
the salt test is not meant for RH above 75 or so

If ya don't like that, go with suicide's link. That's the ORIGINAL hygrometer, nothing to fuck up or even calibrate.

lol i agree i've been shopping for all my supplies the past week, got everything i needed, except a hygrometer so i went to wally word to do some grocery shopping lastnight and the ONLY one i could find was only 3 bucks, i knew it was a joke from the beginning but i figured what the hell i'll try it, i can get a better humidity reading from listening to what my pet dog tells me it is.

I really got lucky with Envirolite digitals. All three of mine worked fine. Min/max thermometers with min/max hygro too. I killed one through carelessness, gave one away, and one I treat like a precious lab insturment.

I think I either got them on eBay or at Lowe's. I was doing some heavy searching locally, but I don't remember if I found them here or not. You'll need to check any hygrometer. I check at 99% with a damp towel, 75% w/ wet salt, and check local RH vs weather reports.
