Product question
    #11729457 - 12/28/09 12:53 AM (15 years, 23 days ago)

Hey everyone I'm a new member and hopefully a first time mushroom grower (legal mushrooms of course). I had a question concerning a certain product. I have found a distributor called substraight on ecrater.com selling pre sterilized substrate jars. Has anyone used pre sterilized products such as this, or dealt with this vendor? Thanks for the replies ahead of time.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't sure where to post

I understand that it is easy to do on your own, but I have chosen to seek pre-sterilized substrate out of convenience. I do not currently have the time, space, or resources to go through all of the processes on my own. Thanks for the response!

If your going to get into the hobby, why not fully submerse yourself in it and sterilize on your own?  It's more gratifying at the end of the day.  All you need is a pressure cooker and a few ingredients for substrate.  This forum has everything you need for research.  But be warned, I've found alot of contradicting information here too.
Good luck!

How much does it cost to purchase say 6, 1/2 pint jars, as well as the required substrate average? The vendor I am looking at sells 6 half pint jars already filled and sterilized for $25. I was told by a buddy of mine that this is cheaper than buying everything on my own. I also do not have access to a pressure cooker 8(

lol for $25 you could get the jars, substrate and still have some money left over....plus with ordering you have to account for shipping.

i view the pre-sterilized bags as good things for people who aren't sure
if they want to fully commit, and make the investment in a pc and other equipment
good things to get to kind-of dip thier feet in the water
just think how committed you are to this hobby already
its not bad if your not sure yet thats completely fine
but if you plan on doing over 24 half pint jars durring your mycology adventures
just get everything you need to do it on your own

like thier is 4 half pints in a quart, and that to me is a very low amount of spawn
i need atleast 4 at a time usualy and thats not for a "big project" either
find out what is really more efficient to you
and good luck

I'm planning on doing anywhere from 4 to 6 jars for my first attempt. I don't think I'll do too many more than that at any point. I am just looking to possibly cultivate a small amount. I really just want to watch all of the processes occur at this point, hopefully to further my understanding of the life cycle of these fungal organisms.

This morning I was given some 1/2 pint jars and some left over substrate (verm/powderised brown rice) from a friend, so I've just decided to go about the whole thing on my own. I'm sure it will be much more rewarding in the end. Thanks to everyone for all of your responses up to this point. I really appreciate the input!

I have watched these! Around a year ago when I first became interested in basic mycology, I had found the whole DVD video broken up into separate sections on google video. Like the nerd I am, I even sat and took notes haha. I really enjoy stuff like this though. Thanks for the suggestion!
