I have been here for a little bit and even though I have not posted much at all I have been reading as much if not more than most others who come to this site(thanks mania). Hopefully this can help a few of you out, if only in a pinch. Petri dishes and culture plates are necessary for a few procedures in the science of Mycology, but are often difficult to come by in certain cities (such as the one in which I live). Ordering online is all fine and good, but then you have to wait for it to ship. Not to mention the price of good glass petris and the fact that the plasticware cannot survive the autoclave. One night, under the influence of some natural inspiration, I decided to take a trip to the Walled Market. Not for anything in particular, I just like to be around women and bright lights when I am in that state of mind. As I was making my rounds I picked up a glance of something just after auto. A transparent, multi well, polypropylene box that had a lid which overlapped all sides. A small box for fishing lures. I just stood there for a second and looked at it thinking to myself "No way, it can't be that convenient." But it was. I bought the thing, tested it out, and it worked. This is not as good as glassware or laboratory grade equipment, but they are everywhere. They are also pretty inexpensive. I have been using them ever since.

You should be able to find these in every sporting goods store as well as Wally World, Tarjet and some grocery stores.

Somehow I don't think it will survive sterilization.

Its not big, only about 3.5in by 6.25in. I can fit about 10 in my PC at a time. They are polypropylene, and I have PC'd them multiple times.

But, to open one dish you have to open all five, exposing them to contaminants. In addition, if one section gets contamination, the spores easily spread to the others.
Plastic petri dishes are sterile when you take them out of the package. Glass petri dishes get awfully bulky and heavy when you have a few hundred working at once. RR

Syringes are polypropylene.. should PC fine. I was just thinking today about those PP food containers by Glad and others, plus they come in quarter-pint individual units.

I agree that there is nothing better than labware, this use was surre not in the minds of the company that makes these. While the risk of contamination is increased I do make it a point to use all the wells at once and follow as sterile a procedure as possible. I have a low rate of contamination so I do not mind the risk. I use petris when I can, when I can't I use these.

Why not try one of those over-sized pill organizers, the ones that are divided into days. Then you could use one well at a time.

being a big time hunter / fisher there are these exact same trays that has it so each compartment opens seperately just like you stated like the pill containers, they sell them here at gander mountain as 'black powder trays' i guess for the diffrent primers / patches / balls but me being a newbie to this thanks for the great idea

So do, some don't. I have a bunch (like 40+) of these boxes for one of my other hobbies, and there's different lid styles and different kinds of internal dividers. Anyone interested, go hit up your local fishing supply place or outdoor shop, they will have an assortment.

I've been exploring the PP5 containers, and I'm impressed so far. Haven't fruited one yet, but I have several in progress. (Plus others with stones.) IF these boxes are PP5 (probably depends on brand and model) they should be atoclaveable.

That's what he said about his, YMMV. The food containers sound better as far as cross-contamination goes. If you have good cultures going, including ATL stones, that's a good sign. I can't see why they wouldn't work.
