Either order it on the internet or look into using whole rice as your substrate. If you have a pressure cooker you could move right onto grains, using such things as bird seed or rye.

Follow all teks to a "T" to avoid failure. They were made through trial and error. I it could be done, chances are it has and can be found by searching for it.

Perlite and vermiculite are completely different, i doubt it will work. Do some grains.

www.mushroomvideos.com Check out the pf tek videos on the main page. If you can find perlite, you have to be able to find vermiculite. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot or a garden center and ask for it, it is very common. Perlite can be harder to find in my opinion because you can't use miracle grow perlite because it is treated with fertilizer, you gotta find some that is untreated which was hard for me. Oh, also the rice you use must be organic and you must grind it first in a coffee grinder, it is all in the videos. Good luck!!!

Any nursery worth being in business will have vermiculite. It's used in seed beds. Don't go to lumberyards or walmart. Go to a normal plant nursery. Also, if you're in the US, Ace hardware usually stocks it. If you're in a big city, hydroponics stores carry large bags. Don't waste your money or time trying to do brf without vermiculite. RR

Yep. After scouring to find gypsum, I found a 40 lb sack for 7 bucks at a locally owned nursery, along with verm. The place was beautiful, with outdoor gardens and trails, so it was an enjoyable trip as well.

I have been to many places such as Lowes and Home Depot to find my supplies. I've had employees tell me they don't carry verm or perlite whatever but it was bullshit. I looked for 15 min and found what I needed it. Point is don't trust an employee to know their shit.

As for the perlite cake idea, even though it's generally recommended against, i'd like to see someone try it just to see if it might work. For experimental purposes. Practically, I'd advise you to keep searching for verm though. Locate an independent garden supply store. You might not know of any, but they're probably there unless you're in the middle of nowhere. Hit up them Yellow Pages.

Perlite cakes will work, just not as well as verm. Somebody- I think RR?- was saying that they used to do it that way back in the day. And Stamets mentions perlite+rice bran in TMC, same difference.
But gimme a ZIP Code & Google, and I'll have verm for the OP in a few mi9nutes.

those statements are very untrue and outdated.
miracle gro perlite works amazing. its actually cheaper per quart than other brands ive used as well and i actually prefer miracle-gro. it does have TRACE ammounts of ferts that just needs a rinse under the faucet like any other perlite.
and for the rice, just use nonorganic. it performs just as well and is cheaper.

I use Miracle Gro perlite sometimes, no problems there. It's smaller than some other kinds, if that's an issue. (Might be better for cakes, though?) May or may not be cheaper than the big bag, but it's easier to find and easier to store.

i had a nursery here in washington state actually say it was "illegal" to sell vermiculite.
not sure if its true at all, but was kind of shocked when they told me that and then they looked at me all funny
