Does anyone know them well? I have a 21 speed bike that used to be neglected, when I got it it would only shift through two or three rear sprockets, and by adjusting the cable tension and derailer position i have where it shifts though all the sprockets, except it skips a few and struggles to catch in the middle sprockets. Any fixes for this?

Well if you can hit high and low it sounds like the cable and limits are fine. My guess is there's a problem with the derailleur itself - maybe the spring got rusted? Or the chain length needs adjusting?
What do you mean the chain has trouble catching on the middle gears? Does it fall all the way off if you try to shift to the middle? Or does it just kinda skip and rattle around at first? Or does it tend to get stuck on one end and not easily move to the middle?

Change the cable and housing! I was a bike mech for a couple years. First thing to do anytime your gears don't work properly is change the cable, and at the very least the rear housing by the derailleur, ideally all the housing. 85% of the time this fixes it. If not, report back, and give us some more info and I'll try to help you out.

Sounds to me like you didn't get the limits right, actually. If you set the limits too wide, this sort of behavior may occur. Although it would be likely that you run into problems with either the largest or the smallest sprocket as well. But changing the gear cables and 'tubes'/housings sounds like a good idea in any case since the bike hasn't been used for quite a while. You might consider applying some teflon spray to the new cables to make them run super smooth (for a while, at least )

if its a deparment store bike..then the solution is to toss it in the dumpster and get a real bike instead...otherwise..the local bike shop should be able to fix it...

Exactly. It'll be cheaper to buy another Walmart bike than to fix that at the bike store.
I got a free Roadmaster from someone at school, and the derailleur was bent. I tried like hell to straighten it out, as I didn't want to put money into it. I ended up just taking the derailleur off as well as the shift cables. Then I just shortened the chain and found a good all around gear and left it at that. It's not a nice bike by a long shot but free is where it's at.

I never understood how to ride a bike with gears when I was a kid. I probably beat the hell out of the mountain bike I had. All I knew was clicking the knob all the way one way made the chain skip a few peddles and all of a sudden it was way too easy to pedal.
