Growing HBWR
    #11721479 - 12/26/09 01:53 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hello,
Just wondering if someone could answer my questions...

How long does it take before a HBWR plant starts producing seeds ?

i have never grown this because where i live it would just die. not tropical like at all. but i would say it would produce seed when it gets to flowering age. i don't know how long that is either. but when you get flowers you could pollinate them your self and get seed.

sorry if i couldn't answer your question more better.

they're big light hungry tropical vines that will flower, but not set seed if the conditions aren't right.  It can be done in the UK, but you're going to need to become quite the cultivator.

Hmmm, sounds difficult.  Thanks for letting me know.

I have more questions maybe you guys could help me with...

Which grows faster Trichocereus Pachanoii or Trichocereus Bridgesii  ?

What sort of germenation rate do you get with Trichocereus seeds?

I got a decent HBWR plant right now, stunted it's growth though by not watering that much.

End the Federal Reserve/audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox, abolish the IRS, end all wars and occupancies, stop the building of an empire that will inevitably fail, and cut all unconstitutional federal programs. Put the power back in the peoples' hands by ending this nanny-state.

For your first question:

HBWR tends to take about 1.5-2 years to put off it's first flowers and like HW said if conditions aren't right seeds are unlikely.

I have a one year old plant right now and it has consumed an entire wooden swing set.

For your second question:

It really depends on the genetics.

I have seen many T. peruvianus that are INSANELY fast, but I have seen others that are quite a bit slower.

My T. bridgesii always grew quite fast, but you need to worry more about over watering with them.

Third question:

If they're viable usually between 50-80%, but there have been times I have gotten more or less.

I'd start from cuttings if I were you.  First growing year, you can double or triple what you started with, and you can harvest your first taste in 2 or 3 years.

seeds take alot more effort, and are 5 or 6 years from harvest.  (but its always worth the time and effort for new genetics)

Look at the plants in My growlog in My sig. They're about 6-8 months old and still have a lot of growing to do. I'm in ireland.
