Agar and.... Seaweed Sticks?

I went to pick up some agar powder from the asian supermarket, but all they had was basically pure seaweed. I mean, it says all you have to do is cut it up into tiny little pieces and add to so much water - doesn't seem too difficult. Is anybody familiar with this? Also, do I need yeast?

yea, something like this
"*Can you get DEXTROSE (straight corn sugar) & LIGHT DRY MALT powder? Both can be had at wine & beer (home brew) places. If so? Level teaspoon of each, into quart water. Simmer on stove to disolve, filter, pour in jars, PC 5 to 8 minutes & you should end up with a fluid that is a light golden beer color (no chunks or flakes). AGAR/LC"
from here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11001974#11001974 (not the exact thread I got the idea from, but a pretty good summary... easy too)
But where does the agar come in? It's the thickening agent, right?

So I have dextrose, malt, and agar - I'm just trying to figure out how much of this agar to throw in there.

Hey, not to derail your thread but since this is on topic - I could only find this rectangular stick of agar that is bright red. there were 2 sticks to the pack. is this kosher? I haven't seen anything like it in the teks. I'm sure it's cool but would like to know if anybody else has used it. I was going to do the grocery store tek as well.

I use powdered agar but I end up dying it red anyways. It makes the mycelium a lot easier to see, especially for some species that have very light mycelium.

Cool, I'm used to seeing petri dishes with pink medium, maybe that is why. Thanks!
