yeah. I rinse, soak, rinse, boil, drain, load, pc.

The extra draining time would come from rinsing after boiling. You get a better water content letting it drain when its still boiling hot. But if you rinse it in the sink first, you cool it down a lot and it'll stay a lot wetter longer.

You have to really watch the boil time tho. If you over-cook it, you'll get too many split grains, which later becomes a pita.

I drain my wbs like breakfast crew. I have a steel strainer i made that fits in my bathtub and a small fan on low on the opposite end.

After the first few minutes nothing is actually draining(most strainers). The remaining water has nothing left to do but evaporate. What i do is go in every 15 minutes and mix the seeds a bit to redistribute moisture, youll notice the seeds on top will dry first.

Like others have mentioned, Ive also noticed that if you dump your seeds after a simmer while still hot, then drying time will be nearly cut in half or more. Just as long as you spread the seed around to remove hot pockets of air/steam to aid in evaporation.

If you soaked only, it will take longer

Something I have noticed with soaking.

IMO the temperature during the soak is the BIGGEST factor.

I have had wbs plump up and nearly go sour in a 36hr room temp soak. At the same time, ive had some wbs outside (40-60f) for about a week with hardly any noticable hydration.

I think this is something that is overlooked when it comes to soaking/simmering teks. Or perhaps im just missing something

-Rinse with hot water.
-Soak in a 50/50 coffee/water mix for 24 hours.
-Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
-Drain well in colander for 30 - 60 minutes while shaking/stirring
  occasionally.
-Load jars to just over half way.
-PC for 90 min at 15PSI.

All i seem to do on the boards these days is reply to WBS threads...

I simmered on my first try and messed up, ended up with slimy/wet grain after pc.

now i just soak for 24hrs+, rinse, dry and pc....perfect every time.

EDIT: Forgot to answer the original question!...I spread the seed out over a rubbermaid lid with a fan blowing over it, mixing it every few mins till all the shiny water coating has evapped off.

I think I simmered mine too long. Some of the seeds split or exploded.

But I dried them out in small strainers and some one a cookie sheet with paper towels. The cookie sheet worked the best. Just put down a layer of paper towels on a flat surface, and spread your birdseed over them in about 1/2-3/4 inch layer. Should dry well in about an hour.

look at my journal, it lists every step i took. Theres a link in my sig.

If it means skipping a step, I'll have to try this for sure.

Seems like my jars have a good bit of moisture in them sitting at the bottom, not a big pool, but more than I would like. I'm thinking some water may have gotten into the jars from PCing since the top of the lids were wet when I took them out. I let the seed sit for 2-3 hours and towel dried it, it seemed about right, who knows. I'll keep these to see what happens, it's not like there's a shit ton of moisture in them. It's just frustrating because I do so well with PF TEK. But I do have some jars from my first batch that show some promising progress. So I can't say I've totally failed yet.

well my first suggestion if you think wbs is a pain in the ass is to move to rye.

follow RR's rye tek to the T and you wont have a single issue. all the moisture is steamed off the surface of the grains after 20-30 minutes.

If you had the lids covered in foil then water should not have gotten in the jars.

It's for this reason alone I rinse with hot water.

When you cover your jars in foil for pc'ing...make sure the foil doesnt come down the jar too far, as if the foil is sitting into the water at the bottom of the pc it will draw water up and into the jars when it is cooling (vacuum).

Try verm in your final mix. Just prepare as usual soak, simmer, drain, but then dump it back in the pot and mix in 10-15% verm. Mix up very well and load your bags/jars and PC. Works wonders for your WBS moisture content.

but you wont be able to shake to grains; that is why people use grains so you can shake and speed up this process.
