How do you drain your wbs?
    #11718131 - 12/25/09 07:15 PM (15 years, 25 days ago)

I prepared some seed today and found that it took extremely long to drain. I let it sit for about 3 or 4 hours and it was still too wet. I ended up taking a few paper towels and running it through the seed in order to dry it. Do you think it took so long because of my colander? At first it seemed that a lot of moisture was escaping from the seed but then later on it felt like it was just stuck there on the seed.

How long do you guys drain your seed before you PC it? Do you leave it in a colander to air dry?

This bird seed is a pain in the ass

I didn't simmer mine either. A lot of people here claim to skip that step and have success. I just rinsed, soaked, rinsed, and drained. It's PCing now.

Any other thoughts? Looks like I can lay out my seed on some paper towels or towel it dry. Just wondering what other cultivators do to dry their seed.

Using a wooden spoon to toss it every 5 minutes. Total of 25 minutes.

obvouisly the hydration process occurs when you let the grain soak for 24 hours. Simmering the grain is a pain in the ass and it hurts your hands if you touch it. I wish I would have never read anywhere you had to simmer it, I pray that a very large person beats the shit out of who ever came up with that method.

partial hydration occurs at the soak. mainly the soak is to germinate the endospores so they can be more easily killed during the PC time. the simmer actually allows the grain to absorb as much water as possible, thats why when you simmer, the grain almost doubles in size.

24 hours soak
Drain out water, you soaked in.
Fill up the pot again,
dump it in a strainer
done.

I promise the same results.

well the addition of gypsum could be good. I havent tried it, but cant see why it would be benefical though.

helps keep individual kernals, well....individual. jars colonize about 2-3 days faster in my opinion. did multiple side by side tests. got same results everytime

place 350 or 450 mL milo seed in jar (depending on if your make transfere jars or jars you'll inject spores into) fill with water wait till next day drain water out and pc.

place 300 mL millet seed in jar (i don't transfere to millet) fill with water wait till next day drain and pc.

gypsum is a binder, meaning it would make it harder to get the WBS out of the jar. I dont know about you but I have a hard enough time without using gypsum. But its also a reason why it may colonize faster. I have plenty of time, ill waste my gypsum on my substrates.

thanks for a different idea of production.

I found that if you take steaming hot grain and lay it out on a window screen over a large container ( i use one of my mono tubs i ain usin) wbs dries in about 20 mins. gotta make sure them seeds are hot though..they'll steam dry quick...the heat and the surface area really do it.

so if you just do the soak and no simmer, get a big ass pot, bring water to boil, dump in your seed, let it heat up to almost boiling again, dump into coliander, then spread out onto your screen
