Is it Mycelium?
    #11717531 - 12/25/09 04:24 PM (15 years, 26 days ago)

This is my first mushroom grow, or atleast the full attempt at it. I have a question. I see new growth of some sort in a couple of my jars and im really excited and scared at the same time. I have a sour sweet milk smell coming from all the jars, but from what it looks like I have healthly mycelium growing. What confuses me is this similar sour milk smell was present even right after I opened my pressure cooker after letting it cool over night. I thought it was just the smell of the plastic and glass being cooked at 250F and didnt suspect any contam. Ever since that smell has been present but just recently have I seen new growth of any kind.

The new growth looks healthy and very white, but the jars just have that odd smell. Is it possible I have a contam and should start some new jars or let this new growth develop more?

here are some pics:

Is that growth at the inoculation points?

Peace

Nice pictures! Man, everybody should post pics like that.
Can't really help with the jars. It looks a bit weird, but that could change in a week.
If the smell doesn't get any worse, I'd say put them away and wait.

I like the smell of BRF, before and after cooking, but I can see how it might be disturbing to some. So stop sniffing your jars.

If its a foul odor I'd say there may be a contam, but if the smell is that of wet grain its fine.
Wet grain can have weird smell but not a sour smell.
Keep an eye on it

but if there is healthy visible mycelium would the mycelium fight off whatever contam is making the smell? like will kit be ok to fruit the cakes if they are completely white?

the cakes wont colonize 100% before that foul smell turns into some sort of mold and mycellium wont grow over certain molds.

My fault I didnt see where you said the smell is the same scent that was present in the pressure cooker after you sterilized the jars. That scent is the smell of HOT wet grain and thats what your cake should smell like until it has the scent of fresh mushrooms hence 100% colonized

I used BRF as my medium...  it did smell like that weird sour sweet milk smell after i opened my pressure cooker after cooling.... but the smell has gotten stronger.l... it isnt really a bad smell just unusual. Either way I see healthy white stuff growing in some jars so I hope I sterlized everything all right

Those little xmas java snowflakes floating all over the place look like condensation dripping down the jar

edit - maybe when you're stoned.
