Internal temp(A MUST READ SO YOU DONT RUIN YOUR GROW)
    #11715788 - 12/25/09 06:26 AM (15 years, 26 days ago)

Everyone around here keeps telling people the correct tempature for incubation while  your substrate is colonizing. What seems to be consistantly the same, around room temp. Well i got a perfect example of what the temp differences can be and how you need to judge them. So i have 2 jars, left them in a box to keep them a little warmer since my room was too cold. So when i checked the outside temp it was 69, ya still cold but warmer than my room. The jars are pretty much done colonizing. I have a 4 qt spawnbag in that same box guess what... The internal temp was 86 degrees. 16 degrees warmer in the middle then outside. So guess what, it contamed. Luckely i was able to save enough spawn to add to some new jars.  Everyone needs to remember to take in account for the heat mycl produces and not let this happen.

Yep, bags especially, you can get a lot of dense mycelium in a small volume. With jars there's some room around each one.
I wonder though- would it have contaminated anyway?
We talk about the good myc outrunning the bad- but I wonder if it just would have corned the bad stuff, left it festering.

How do you measure the temp inside the bag? Just shove a thermometer in there?
Reason I'm asking is that I shot up my first bag yesterday... :uhoh:

ya, after i saw some nasty bacteria , well first let me say i had the thermometer under the bag and it was reading 77 degrees. So i was like well hell if its that hot on the bottom imagine how warm it is in the middle. So i opened the bag and probed the themometer in the middle. I flipped out, only time Ive seen that is when RR did it. No one els has talked about this really. But its a major part during the first few phases. actuallyy thruout the whole process.

just remember to pc your bags around 2 hours depending on how much spawn you put in it.

honestly i think the verm and brf i put in the bag may have help caused it.

I've measured temps between stacked tubs, that gets pretty hot. There's a lot of mycelium growing at once.
This one bag is just six cups of grain, same as a half gallon jar, I'm doing a comparison with ATL 7. Should get more stones in a bag, if my guess is right.
But I've got more bags here, I want to do a big one... I bet it would heat my incubation chamber right up to a toasty temp.

Thanks for the heads up, I had the ambient air at 75 deg.F at one point, poor little mycelium was getting cooked alive.

so what you guys are saying is it might be a good idea to incubate
large bags lower than 75f
to compensate for the heat generated by mycelial growth ?
taco you said 16 degrees? thats amazing !
im about to start again with bags, this thread is making me rethink a
TIT for my room witch is about 60-65 this time of year

It's all about density. If your spawn is in jars, especially little ones, the heat radiates out. But a big dense ball of mycelium holds heat within itself.
I use styrofoam coolers, unpowered. If the temp gets low inside, I will put in a  jar of hot water.
Once the jars warm up enough to get going, they keep themselves pretty warm.
But that's a well-insulated incubation chamber. A plastic tote won't hold heat as well.
So really it depends- get a thermometer and check your local conditions. But be prepared for a pleasant surprise.

ahhh that was VERY helpfull doc
now im leaning towards shaping the bags more brick shaped for incubation
than just a round bag with a empty tapperd top and all the wight at the bottom,
surely ill use my thermometer to see witch works best for my conditions

So if you were to regulate the heat of your jars, wouldn't it be best to keep ambient temperature a bit higher after inoculation/G2G, then drop it down as the mycelium colonizes?

Yes, you can do that, but if you're constantly starting new projects as the earlier ones colonize, it increases your workload.

Bear in mind, glass is an insulator, so even if the substrate within is smaller, the heat has a harder time escaping than it does from a plastic bag which doesn't insulate nearly as much.

I've previously reported up to a 20F heat difference in colonizing spawn bags vs the ambient air around them.  In fact, it's the only heat source planned for my underground colonization room.  Considering that it will hold over 1500 substrate blocks and is very well insulated, I suspect I'll have to keep a window open even in winter, to preventing overheating.

its amazing how hot it gets. I cant imagine being around a commercial incubation. I bet when you stand next to all the blocks you can feel the heat being put off. Like this brick wall by my house. The sun beats down on it all day, so when you walk by it you can feel all the radiant heat the wall is putting off.

okay so i'm new and i have a quick question about this...

I am renting a room from a friend and his wife (they know what im doing and are completely fine with it) but i'm getting ready to start my first try.

anyway I live in virginia and its winter ( we just had 2 foot of snow ) but they keep the temperatures pretty low inside of the house around 70 during the day and they set it on 60 at night even though it feels alot colder to me..

will that be satisfying enough for mycelium to colonize? I'm going to try cakes and grain both for my first time..but should i add a small heater for incubating or will they be fine without in the half way frigid conditions.

what i was thinking if i require heat was to take a very small heater and take the very bottom drawer out of a dresser covering the hole of course, and using the top drawers as my incubator

I live in Richmond myself, and those temps are fine to grow, although a lil warmer temperature will help em colonize faster

okay so use the heater for colonization, and no extra heat for fruiting? i have a small shotgun FC setup for the cakes, and Im not sure exactly how i want to do the grains i've been thinking alot about a monotub but i cant find a real good detailed tek for creating this, all that i can find are not specific at all to the size of holes and everything..
