Do I need to cover the sides of my trays?

This thought came across my mind while reading another thread about using white to block out the sides and RR was saying something about its not so much the light getting through the sides that causes side pinning, but it's the gap that is created when it shrinks causing a perfect evirement for pins to form. So do I really need to cover the sides of my trays?

It's been my experience that covering the sides helps reduce side pinning, although I certainly haven't done 'scientific' experimentation on the issue. If you have a black bag lining the tub, that will block the light and take care of the gap too. If not, there's no harm in putting tape on the outside.

I put a couple layers of duct tape on the outside of my tub to cover the substrate. I also used a black trash bag on the inside to place the substrate in. I had no side pinning.

Black out as usual, but just make sure it's hydrated enough where it doesn't suck away from the walls and create the environment for that to happen.
If you're that worried about it do what wattballasts does and let them flourish.

That is actually a really good idea. Using side pinning to your advantage, from what I can see, could double and maybe triple one's yield. I might do that with my current Burma and my future Cambodian/Brazilian grows.

Yeah I did it with mine after the first flushes, turned out pretty good actually. Picking out all those aborts on the sides were annoying.
That pic is from wattballasts though, I wish mine was that prolific!

Oh yeah, that was well-done. I bet there are more shrooms on each individual side than there are on the top. Why is that the pins really seem to like the sides of the substrate? I have noticed this with PF cakes too. Is the moisture content better on the sides?

Pins form where conditions are best. The humid gap around the edges of a substrate tray is perfect for them. Also, it isn't a moisture issue. The substrate shrinks because the mycelium is actually consuming it, releasing the carbon as CO2. RR

Would you recommend placing trays like that in an FC, RR?

I don't even worry about side or even bottom pins, I use clear tubs and just pick them with the rest of the flush. They are just bonus shrooms to me and they will grow whether you block the light or not so just use clear tubs so you can see them and pick them with your flushes or they could rot. CH

Yeah I'm thinking to use this to my advantage. If I get a lot of side pinning I'll just remove from tray and fruit all sides.

Or, remove from the tray a week after full colonization. RR

IME.. the tape on the sides is not really necessary.. the black bag lining the inside of the tray makes life much easier.. before i started lining the tray i would get a shitload of small pins and aborts on the side.. it sucked..

Well I noticed on my last tray that I had a bunch of side pinning that turned into good shrooms after taking sub out of tray, my only aborts were from the top and only a few from the sides. I think RR's recomendation will work good in my situation, I'll give it a shot and let yall know.

Yeah I would like that too if my sub's didn't shrink before my first flush.
