Some casing questions.

I have 6 quart rubbermaid casing containers. Can I line the inside of them with alumnium foil to prevent light from coming in? Anything else I can do to make it opaque? When I apply the wet layer of verm on the bottom of my casing do I sterilize the verm? Wont this be a easy contamn? Using hydrated lime sounds scary due to the fact of easy burning. Can I NOT put the lime in the mixture and replece it with oyster shell?(50-50+mix). Ive read that you can simply put plastic wrap over the casing trays during incubation for humidity is this a good idea or do I need a coolmist humidifier? Thanks

I wouldn't use alum foil on the inside. Use duct tape or paint the sides and bottom...on the outside of the container. I buy small rubbermaids that are dark blue or green...then you don't have to mess around with them...plus they are only $3.50 each.
For an easy casing you can use Verm and Coco Coir...no Lime needed. 60/40... more Verm than Coco Coir. You can nuke the casing material in the micro wave for 5 minutes. Stir it up and then nuke it again for another 5 minutes. Then let it cool down before applying.
You can add Oyster shell if you want a little stronger casing layer.

Yea I have your tek printed out. But I have no coco coir and I need to case asap (the jars have looked 100% for a week). Any place that I can get coco coir at? I think I read that petstores have it as reptile bedding or I could be imagining things. Thanks

try a pet store.
Reptile bedding that comes in a brick.
Forrest Bed by T-Rex is one brand. Bed of Beast is another brand.
Petco had a sale on Coco Coir....not sure if the sale is still on. 2 for the price of 1.

Cool. Do you think it will be diffiucult for a first timer to use this tek and get good results? How much oyster shell by volume should I add to the mixture?

no... not difficult at all.
If you use Oyster shell try 1 part to 20 parts of the Verm/Coco Coir. Or a little bit less....just enough to stiffen up the casing material some.
I just eye ball it now.
I get free Oyster shells from a Oyster bed thats in my area.

Thats cool I bought a few lbs from myco supply. I know that once I get the feel for it I wont have a problem But I would love to do it right the first time. I wanted to use poo but its not dryed out and its frozen. If only I could pasteurize wet poo.......Or can I ?Hopefully It will dry out soon, how deep does the container have to be? Right now I have 3 3/4 inch deep containers
