perilite is so damn fantastic?
    #1171527 - 12/26/02 03:00 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

6 cakes in a 7.5 gallon snap lid container Temp kept btw 70-80F
- one inch of colander drained perilite
misting 3 times a day with fanning

how do i know if adequate humidity is being achieved
should there be water droplets on the side of my chamber constantly
should there be a layer of standing water in my perilite layer?

one cake producing pins...pins are somewhat covered with a light white layer...too much humidty?
has anyone used a cigar humidifier gauge before with success?

danky very much

Water droplets are a good indication. If you wet your perlite, unless you bought retarded perlite, it will work.

No. There should be a lot of condensation around the bottom, but no standing water.

You shouldn't have to mist if you're using perlite. That may be what's causing the added rH.

What I've always read is that you should put about 2 inches of perlite at the bottom of the terrarium, then put about an inch of water in. Doing this you shouldn't really be able to see any standing water unless you dig about an inch down into the perlite. Adding a little peroxide to the water in the perlite could also be beneficial.

Only have visible water with floating perlite if you have bubbler stones buried and are pumping fresh air thru....You can also put straight peroxide into the water to stop contams from starting....The h202 will break down and give up its oxygen and will leave water behind....

I normally soak my perlite in water w/ some H2O2 mixed in. Then, I will know if the humidity is high enough if there is condensation on the sides of the container near the perlite. But I always end up with mushrooms w/ fuzzy growth up the sides (mycelium). Maybe high humidity is the cause for my low yields...

thanks for all the input!
goin to stick with visible condensation around perlite layer

then if condensation is lacking, mist with h2o2/water on sides of chamber to increase humidity

if temp is kept constant, correct range
low humidty = cake drying out= low yeilds

can anyone finish this equation, temp held constant, correct range
high humidty= ? cake =? ?

Moist perlite alone is sufficant to keep humidity lvls in the green.... no need for misting at all....

i was having the same issues you are having when i first started....
i didnt trust the perlite, i wanted a definitive answer...
so i got 2 hygometers... they both never went above 85%
they are crap....
total waste of money
just trust the perlite...
it is your friend...

To moisten the perlite which is the best method? Soak it or mist the crap out of it before the cakes are in terrarium? Another may be to just dump water throughout and over the perlite while it sits in the terrarium. I'm not sure which of these methods would work best, anyone know ?

I used to soak mine in water mixed with h202.
Then put it in a strainer...so it wasn't soaking wet.
Then put it in the fruiting chamber.
You don't want your perlite too wet.

And most don't read accurately above 80% humidity, so for cultivation purposes they are pretty much useless. But the thermometer is good.

Is there anything that can be done to make the Humidity go down a little if it is to high. Right now im just waiting for the cakes to start pining.

ive never had a problem with humidity being too high....
cakes pin just fine, cakes fruit just fine....
i had a few gauges for a while, but they were unreliable as shit....
i just drench my perlite in the bag, drain off excess water and dump the whole thing into my rubbermaids.......
ive never had a humidity problem....
(tho i also use a cool-mist humidifier on a timer.... its mostly for air exchange tho...)
