I know of the benefits concerning yeild size and using gypsum...does it have a place when using straw logs? At what point do you add the gypsum? I did not see it used in the RR videos concerning straw basket or logs and was wondering if you guys used it on straw????

i see no reason why you cant give it a pasteurization bath with it ... you will have to figure out a ratio with it that would make it worth the while though as most will remain in the water ...

I've actually never used gypsum with straw. It seems it would help, but the problem is not having it all wash off when you drain the pasteurization water. It might be that you can toss some in when you add the spawn, but I can't speak from experience on that one. I'm gearing up right now to inoculate hundreds of straw logs, so you can bet I'll be experimenting with this. RR

I am making a few logs, I will experiment with half the bags and add some gypsum to the straw directly after pastuerization, and report back...RR let us know how you make out!

I've added it to my straw before it's pasteurized in the oven. It doesn't seem to hinder growth. 90straw/10compost mix with field capacity H20 and I "eyeball" the gypsum, it's usually about a cup.

I took a mini straw bale from michaels and soaked it in a pasteurized soup of horse poo, coffee, gypsum, worm castings. I let that little stinkbomb brew for 2 weeks.
I then pasteurized again and put it in some mono's with a pretty high spawn rate, 6 qts spawn for 64 qt mono. Only 3 inch substrate.
It's colonizing very vigorously.

I never use compost with my straw, tried it early on but had too many issues and not enough benefits. I look forward to reporting back on the gypsum/straw log.
