Flaming Lips DSOTM

The Flaming Lips released a cover of the entire Dark Side of the Moon album yesterday on iTunes.
It's reeeeeally good. Pink Floyd fans might not like it, but if you like the Lips, you should love it.

I would seed it for downloads, but I'm not really sure how to do that. I'm sure it's available if you know where to look.

Pink Floyd fans might not like a cover of a Pink Floyd album?
They must have butchered it.

Thanks so much for posting this! I totally forgot it was being released this month. I'm listening to it for the 3rd time right now. Pink Floyd and Flaming Lips are both in my top 5 favorite bands, so I don't really know what to think. On one hand, it retains enough of the original music that it satisfies the Pink Floyd fan in me, but on the other hand, they did change a great deal of it (background music especially). Not that changing it is bad (and actually it would've been stranger if they kept everything the same), but because it's such an important and famous album it's kind of tough to hear it from another perspective.
Either way, it's pretty much what I expected, and it's interesting to hear it because DSOTM is clearly an album that influenced the Flaming Lips a lot.

Eh, I don't even know if I like this band. The vocals really turn me off. Maybe I should check this out though.

Not to be a dick, but I don't think you get it. The Flaming Lips MUST be experienced live!
It's not for everybody, but they're easily in the Top 5 live bands I've ever seen. There's more crowd interaction than any other show, great visuals, great music, and the crowd is typically really cool.
What's not to like? Sure, Wayne doesn't havea great voice, but there's a lot going on to make up for it.

I guess I just expect live music to be mostly about the music
I've got to admite I appreciate their extravagences. I don't doubt the crowd is cool.

I like Pink Floyd and The Flaming Lips, but I usually am not to fond of entire album covers. I guess I'll give it a shot anyway, don't have anything to lose.

Well, they're really good musicians.
Maybe not in the classical sense, but I guarantee they can duplicate certain sounds live that no other band can touch. And the band's enthusiasm and love for what they do shines through their performance, while still being a giant party.
But, I do know a few people who hate The Flaming Lips. I can't see how. It must be like when I tell people I don't like the Grateful Dead and they say, "You just don't get it."

Yeah, I hear what you mean about the Grateful Dead thing. I love them now, but I used to not like them. Same with the Beatles, one day they just 'clicked'. Either way, when I try and push my musical tastes on somebody and they don't like it, I just kind of sit there like, "how do you not like this song?"

Yeah, same here with the Beatles. I bought my brother in law Let It Be, Revolver, and Abbey Road Remastered for Christmas.
I've been listening to them all night. But I used to think they sucked. I think I finally just heard the good stuff. When I was younger all I had heard was the early super poppy stuff. Once I found Abbey Road and the White Album I was sold.
I'll give the Dead another chance, but I don't know where to begin. They have a huuuge catalog and I don't know what to start with, plus everyone says the live shows are the way to go and the quality sucks and they're hard to find... seems like a lot of hassle to hear some music.

I liked a few songs by them, 8 days a week, Yesterday, Come Together, but that was about it. I took DXM one night, and listened to Come Together, and something just fucking clicked. I got all their albums the next day, and instantly fell in love. Hard Days Night all the way through Abbey Road are all masterpieces in my opinion.
I was the same way with the Grateful Dead. Don't get any "Best of" discs, they're kind of bad. Get "Live Dead" and "Europe 72" and "Anthem of the Sun" - my 3 favorite albums by them.

Oh, I think I like this. I've really been enjoying Embryonic the last couple weeks, and this has the same sonic attitude. Which I think is certainly a different approach to this material. It's still very psychedelic, just less laid back and more... DIY? I don't know. But I can see why people don't like The Lips. Too bad for them...

Embryonic really hit a nerve with me, it's so experimental and raw sounding. "Powerless" and "Worm Mountain" are my favorite tracks.

Listening to it now, I like it.
I can see how some might not though.
Kinda glad they completely reworked everything instead of just covering it note for note.

Have you listened to their new record, Embryonic? Holy awesomeness. It's like Yoshimi travels back in time to meet the Lips of the "Finally the Puck Rockers are Taking Acid" days of the mid-80's...grimy psychedelic goodness.

Yeah the Lips live is a spectacle but not really a musical experience...definitely a band I prefer to hear albums from than see live. Part of that is that they often play the same show live in every town, down to the stage banter. Great show, but same every night..
