Splitting caps on cubes
    #11706927 - 12/23/09 03:39 PM (15 years, 28 days ago)

Friends,

I've grown some cubes from a spore syringe. Mycelial growth was normal, but fruiting has taken a long time (5-6 weeks and only a couple of mushies so far). A couple of them have had caps which have split before the veil has broken. Is this something to do with the water they're (not) getting? (the hygro reads 92% with perlite humidification). Maybe the temperature's wrong? Or is it something else? (lighting, etc...) Should I water the fruiting cakes directly (rye grain substrate with plain verm casing). I've heard it's bad to get any water on them, but another source showed the colonised cakes being sprayed, and even soaked in water once colonised before the fruits have appeared. Should I alter the casing? I've heard peat moss and verm is good.

There may be a couple of questions in there, so thanks for any help on this one.

Post pictures, or search here to see if they're split caps or cracked caps(scaling).  Each is different, but often confused with each other.

do they look like this?

They turned out good, but not sure why this was happening. Here's a quote from RR on this pic.

Hi Grizz,

No they don't look like the ones in your picture. I don't have a camera so can't show you, but there are several deep lacerations running from the centre of the cap to the outer edges. There are maybe five of these cracks about 4mm deep, and the cap is about 1.2cm across.

I guess if in doubt I should throw it out yeah?

This is only my first attempt, so didn't think everything would run smooth until I've had more practice. Just trying to figure out what I should change on the next run.

PS. a couple of the little fellas came out ok looking and I had a very pleasant experience with these.

That sounds like scaling, caused by low humidity.

This is caps splitting at the edges. I don't think humidity was a problem in this.

Humidity did cause this. It is scaling or cracking of caps.

In addition, scaling improves quality.  With shiitake, caps with scaling can command up to double the price.  Shiitake growers routinely lower the humidity in their grow rooms for a few days before harvest.
