The Self-Knowledge Thread
    #11699237 - 12/22/09 02:02 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Let's leave this thread open for anyone to give their honest opinion about another person in this thread.  We can all learn from how other people interpret us, as well as how we interpret their criticism.  And so, we can all freely debate the personal criticisms from other people in this thread as well.  If you have an opinion about someone else, you damn well be ready to defend it.

I'm not sure how the flaming rules will apply here, but I would say criticism could be as biting as it needs to be, but the only real flaming could be non-constructive criticism, i.e. namecalling, slurs, ect.  I guess in some cases, calling someone an asshole might be constructive, depending on what was meant by it.  I'm not going to ask for any special treatment of this thread though, so you are responsible for the content of your posts.

Just think of this like philosophical fight club.  Feel free to bring up past moronic posts and use every angle to your advantage.

Since no one has posted yet, I'm gonna take a shot at all of you at once just to leave myself open to get this going.  I think in general most of the people on this forum get more satisfaction out of being able to joke with people who have similar beliefs with themselves then actually uncovering their own biases.  I think that there are a lot of people who unnecessarily resent questions of their beliefs, and more who will ignore anyone who questions them.  I think a lot of people here have too strong a faith in psychology, and as a result make themselves crazy by believing that names for symptoms are actually diseases to be "had"  I think that this could all be fixed if people didn't have such a need for self-importance, but this is the catch 22.  As a philosophy forum, this place is driven by self importance.

Can I call you a fool?  I mean, if a fool is someone who thinks with their desires rather than their wit and uses emoticons when they feel cognitive dissonance ?

I actually think this is a good idea for a thread, but I'm wondering how much Diploid & Lakefingers will let slide...:strokebeard:

Well, once they post in the thread, assuming the first post isn't to lock it, then they would be fair game.

No, I mean we could give them some self knowledge.

The social contract of this thread implies posters who are in it are fair game, those who are not aren't, unless you speak about the whole forum.

I'll bite with some constructive criticism.  OP usually is correct but comes off as arrogant, Poid is generally precise but tends to take statements out of context and is more concerned with winning a debate than getting at the truth, and Icelander typically provides good advice on maintaining psychological health but is also too pessimistic and fixated on the negative.

I await the flames.  :hellfire:

I only act arrogant to make fun of people, but I guess that's arrogant.

But yes I do agree I am usually correct.

As for you, I don't quite have a solid judgement.  At times, you seem to be a pretty dogmatic thinker, and when questioned you actually respond to extremely broad questions with an answer.  This is a good thing, for me, because it makes questioning actually produce quality (in whatever sense) discussion.  Most people, when pushed to define what they are talking about, enter a childlike state where they namecall or just joke around, but you normally don't it seems.  You are very consistent.  I've seen you pull that childlike stuff too, don't get me wrong, its just that you haven't put me on ignore or given me a bad rating for it.
