PF cake stability
    #1169567 - 12/25/02 12:39 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

The only vermiculite I could find anywhere was of a larger grade, not the fine grade that is preferred... I didn't think about it at the time. Next time I'll be sure to crush it up before mixing the substrate. My PF cakes are becoming fully colonized and when I birth then I'm afraid they won't hold together. The pieces of vermiculite don't look like they're all together. I'm not sure if the mycellium is strong enough to really hold the vermiculite strong enough that it won't just flake when I try to birth them. Has anyone else had this concern?

Case them. That's what I would do, you don't have to worry about stability and you increase your yields. Win win situation...

I don't have the setup or money for that this time. I'll probably give it a go next time, but for my first I'm just using perlite (since I already have all the supplies).

Ayrios, casing is sooooo easy!!! You really should do it instead of abadoning your cakes. For a great casing method check out this TEK:
Sea of Shrooms TEK
This casing method can double your yeild, and is VERY inexpensive.

I prefer to use the coarser verm because it colonizes faster than the fine. Don't worry - your cakes will hold together.

I prefer the course over the fine I know it colonizes faster and from the tests I?ve done and this may sound crazy and may just be but I?ve found that the spaces in the course verm seem to cause the myc to be a little more rhyzo.

When it comes time to birth your cakes, the mycelium network should be well established. I wouldn't worry about it.
