Why do bags seem to be out of style?
    #11689065 - 12/20/09 09:20 PM (15 years, 30 days ago)

It seems like monotubs are the most popular choice here. How come bags aren't used more? Commercial growers use bags frequently, I haven't seen any pictures of big commercial grows in tubs.

With bags if you get a contam you're limited to the loss of the bag but if you lose a monotub that's a lot of work down the drain. Is there a downside to bags I'm not seeing?

Maybe it's because monotubs take better pictures?

monotub are easy to use, they can maintain the right climate for mushroom by them self. someone with lot of space and a complete room dedicated to mushroom would maybe have better result with bag yeah. but then again it depend of the species. Oyster will grow better in bag I think, but cube will be more difficult to grow in bag like we do for oyster .

i love both!
sometimes i dont want to put all my eggs in one basket, sometimes i do
+ you can make tubs with bags- just like giant (w/e size you want) pf cakes.
check out this idea just one of a million things you can do..

Bags are nice, Jack used them before he switched to monotubs.  The monotubs just seem more practical for space since they stack on top of themselves, and don't require shelves.

I made 12 bags of supplemented sawdust in the last 24 hours. Most are for gold enoki, some for reishi. The enoki's make good christmas presents because they are a winter mushroom with medicinal properties and will fruit outside in january. Bags also allow you to use more of the available space in your PC. When doing grain for instance, if your PC only holds 7 qt jars, you will find you can do more with bags. Bags aren't going away any time soon.

The main reason for people not using bags is that most people have small pressure cookers.

FoodSaver. plastic tarp grommets. tyvek. make any size bag you want, tiny to huge. PC size is a factor. choose your poison.

As a bag grower myself for some time now I can tell you that the reason most growers don't use them is because they're not near as easy as other methods out there. Most growers honestly don't have the skill, patience, or equipment to handle this type of grow. An experienced bag grower will have the knowledge to formulate substrate recipes, money to continually buy bags and substrate ingredients, and more importantly possess the appropriate amount of equipment to prepare the substrate and sterilize these bags in a timely manner.

A good bag grower can have anywhere from 300-400 bags in process at any one time and contain everything on shelves. The other caveat to growing in bags is the amount of species that can handle the high CO2 environment is limited to handful of strains and species. There are a lot of logistics involved in bag growing, but once it's mastered there's really no other methods I would ever consider personally.

What are all the complicated logistics of which you speak? All the bag teks are extremely simple. Making a bag is much simpler than building a monotub.

also bags DONT need to be sterilized- pasteurization works fine just as long as you have no grains in your substrate.
edit-just drop a quart of spawn into 2-3 good handfuls of sub. seal, and massage.

Well like he already mentioned, money to keep buying bags, can only work with spp. that are tolerant to higher co2, and equipment. After buying 150 bags, I had to buy an impulse sealer. I inoculated all but 2 of the bags I mentioned earlier this morning. Re-sealing the bags can be a pain. One bag took me 4 tries to get a good seal. I'm still kinda new to bag cultivation, but so far I like it.

i use tape, but would like to have an impulse sealer.
having an extra pair of hands around certainly helps out.
