What a little FAE can do for Oysters *Pics*
    #11674233 - 12/18/09 10:18 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I am super excited that I finally figured out what everyone had been trying telling me for the past 2 weeks.

I had never grown oysters before, and so I just used the shotgun tek RR uses in his videos. My oysters seemed to pin very fast, but then not grow much and just create coral structures. After spending 6 days going from this-

To this (day 4) -

To this (day 6)-

Even the Blue ones were not doing so hot

I was willing to try anything...

So I took the lid off, placed them in my window with my sweet pea babies, and hoped they would also enjoy the bright indirect light and fresh air. (Duh!)

Well after only 24 hours of being on the windowsill, this is what they look like-

(you can see them growing nearest to the light)

The sad, weird looking mushroom on the top in the middle was the biggest one I had had out of those first 6 days

and here they are the next day (yesterday day 8)!

:whoo::whoo: :whoo::whoo: :whoo::whoo:

So thank you everyone who said that my oysters needed more FAE! You were right!

Oh, one question I have, when do you think I should harvest these? Today maybe?

Thanks!

yes today, they look the right size to me.  i like them a bit smaller, more tender and not so much sporulation.

i agree those are ready for harvest
one thing about oysters is they are very C02 intolerant
like you have found out
i had some blues that did the same thing
grew long stems and small caps due to lack of fresh air

i have a few pink and blue straw logs going now
they will be put in a makeshift greenhouse
and put outside here soon

nice lookin fruits you got there
doing cakes is a great way to learn more
about their needs
keep up the good work and go big

Oysters are the easiest mushroom to 'read' and would be a better start for people than cubes.

If you have fat stems and tiny caps, it's an indication of insufficient light.

If you have the coral look, it's insufficient fresh air.

You had both problems and cured both problems with FAE and light.  The next indicator is thin caps.  If you'll fruit oysters in cooler temperatures, they will be much meatier.  Nice grow and thanks for sharing!

Yes gorgeous.

I just got my first pink print printed under the running flow hood.

All work I have done with spores so far has grown only contams, so I'm hoping for better luck now.

Is there a way to get a good spore print from an Oyster without a flowhood?

on a piece of foil with a bowl or cup over it

It's not that easy though. Especially for a quality print.
I put a bowl over a cap (wild agaricus) one time and it turned to mush (although I probably waited too long)
Now I make sure filtered air can get to the cap. Mostly I use a half pint with tyvek
Then you think about what Jef says....contams. It's good to get a clean print if your  making syringes I guess

yeah oysters do print pretty damn fast, but I hope to create a printing chamber kind of like a glove box but with shelves or something. Not high on my priority list.

Excellent awareness KJA! That cake will save you a whole pack of mushrooms from the grocery!

why would you ask that? i don't have a flow hood or anything but, i bake the foil, wipe with alch. the drawer come out and get cleaned with anti-bact and sprayed with lysol. the area of the room i use now has a hepa runing all the time. the drawers close just as tight as a tub in the front and the other 3 sides are coverd in plastic. if your asking because of the marker, that was after i removed the drawer to my GB. every thing in the GB had been sprayed with lysol and wiped with alch. including the GB.
