Doesn't matter, even the old ones were aluminum. My 70 year old Ball, which works like an AA, is aluminum. Virtually all pressure canners back at least to the twenties, were aluminum. An exception are some made during WWII which were steal, as aluminum was needed for the war effort.

I don't know about the vintage PCs floating around on eBay, but nice AAs can be had for significantly less than what they cost, sometimes even new ones.
This twenty two year old AA sterilizer was brand new and works like a charm. Only thing I'm thinking about is changing out the gauge, toggle valve and blowout plug, but they work just fine.

is there any way to tell if my AA is aluminum or steel? like i said i know what a aluminum PC sounds and feels like when you tap on it, and it doesnt sound/feel like that, but besides that there is no way for me to really tell. i know my pc is over 50 years old for sure, but how much older i have no clue, plus it has no marks on it whatsoever or labels.
if someone has an aluminum 921 and would weight it, i could compare that i suppose.

If it's an AA, it's aluminum, trust me.
Try to stick a magnet to it.

no.
aluminum is gonna be at least 1/4" thick and have a brushed or dull finish ( on some areas ). steel will be like RR said like 12 ga. ( 1/16" or so ) like high quality pots and pans and usually have a polished finish all around.
stainless steel cookware isn't magnetic (necessarily) some kinds of stainless steel may be magnetic, but i don't think so. stainless steel has too much nickel and something else in it. if it's stainless and magnetic, it's a stainless coating. most steel cookware also has things like coppper added into the bottom for even heat conductivity.
