Yield of PF TEK Method, & Bacteria Susceptibility?

I've never grown mushrooms before, but I plan to soon. I would like to inquire as to what the yield maybe for 12 rice cakes using the PF Tek method. Also, if I don't use a pressure cooker and just boil the jars for 2 hours, how much of a risk am I running for a bacteria infection? Thank you all for your help,. it's priceless to me.

My advice would be to not boil the jars for two hours. I steam sterilized six jars for about 80 minutes, and I had no contamination problems. Two hours may dry out your substrate. Good luck.

Sorry to sound like a fool, but what is steam sterilization? Is it any different from just boiling the jars?

Steam Sterilization should be the same thing.........(boiling water in a large pot with jars inside). Make sure you put some type of cloth between the bottom of the jars and the bottom of the pot to prevent your jars from cracking.

Oh, thank god you told me to put a cloth inbetween, that would've been disastrous. Thank you so much for your help Mycologist. Does anyone know how many grams it takes to equal an ounce?

Hmmmm........if you didn't know about that then I should probably point you in this direction: http://www.fanaticus.com/sub-prep.htm
The lower half of the web-page gives very detailed instructions on how to steam sterilize (boil).

your chances of contamination greatly increase without a pressure cooker... its probably the best investment u can get... i got a BIG ass one (i think it holds like 24 1/2 pints) at wallmart for 50$ if all goes well, expect around 3 grams dried per cake..... if all goes well.... chances are, u will lose a few jars to being a n00b..... lord knows i did..... but thats what its all about... cant make a cake without breaking a few eggs.....

if you dont have a pressure cooker then i wold recommend presterilizin your substrate by laying out on a pan and bake in oven for about 15 min. i dont have a pressure cooker so i do this additional steep for added protection against contamination.

So, wait... can you stack jars on top of each other inside the pressure cooker?

Yes you can. Stack away.
I also stack cakes inside my terranium. Lowers my yeild/cake a bit, but lets me get 12 cakes into one cooler no problem.
