Using some teks and need suggestions thanks
    #11681160 - 12/19/09 02:31 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

This is gonna be my first attempt at using WBS suggestions would be great. I grabbed some teks for the site that i would like to use but there are a few kinks i need to work out. And im kinda of confused with the details and the order in which these teks work..so please set me straight.

1 quart jars
6 quart tubs
spore syringes..(wish i could make LC)
cool mist/whatever FC i decided to use.

(I have been reading and studying for weeks and watched videos..im still confused on the exact process) ive done cakes a few times now

First my spawn is going to be WBS. Ill be using spore syringes i ordered off the internet. Ill be using 1 quart jars with tyvek and micropore tape or whatever i decide for gas exchange. Question 3/4 of the way full of WBS how many cc's or the spore syringe do i need to add 2-3 is what i thought.

Second ill be using coir for my bulk substrate. Ill need to expand this and then pasturize it correct? and do you add this to your spawn while this coco is still wet?

after 100%? colonization of the bulk substrate?! i then add the casing? which will be the

50/50plus tek
    *  15 1/2 cups vermiculite
    * 15 1/2 cups peat moss
    * 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
    * 1.2 cups of hydrated lime
    * 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

as soon as i add casing it goes into the FC, unless teh strain is  strain tha benefits from patching.ALso ill be useing 6 quart tubs lined with foil..

so prolly like 1.5" of substrate/ how much coir/ how much casing should i add? also i only start to mist at the casing point? im assuming this because  there should still be moisture in the coir and dont want to over do it.. thanks again

do you need to pateurize the casing layer? i've never done one before. i was gonna pasteurize my first one though, just potting soil.

looks like you have got everything else spot on. 2 cc of spore solution per quart jar will be fine, pc for 60-90 mins at 15 psi (just put the stove setting on high)

spawn substrate is fully colonized, spawn to bulk. i dont think the bulk sub has to be FULLY colonized when you apply a late casing. actually, im pretty sure any time before that would be better

Jars 2/3 to 3/4 full. 1 mL per quart is plenty of spores. (I use 2-3 mL of LC though.)
Casing optional with coir. Better yield but more risks.
Don't line tubs with foil. Use a black bag inside or dark tape outside.
For those 6 quart tubs, I use two quart jars of colonized grain mixed with enough coir (+whatever) to fill the tub.

Good questions- keep them coming. :wink:

Or longer, if you need to. Nothing wrong with going 120 on quarts and larger.

No. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Run it at the lowest temperature setting you can while maintaining full pressure.

Casing layers do need to be pasteurized, I've had poorly prepared verm/peat contaminate. You do need to pasteurize the coir, you can boil some water then throw it on your coir in a bucket. Cover the bucket then use the coir the next day, yes it needs to be moist, but not soaking wet. Squeeze it until only a few drops come out. then, take your spawn and mix it with coir in a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio. Casing layer should be applied when the tray/tub is fully colonized. The casing layer should be a half inch to an inch thick. You wait ~ a week so that myc can grow across the casing then introduce it to fruiting conditions.  60 minutes at 15 psi is what is recommended by Doc's WBS TEK for grain prep. You use ~2ml per quart jar. I'm using half pints so I use 1 ml.

Doc's right, you start out on high heat, but then set it to low/medium when the pressure has built within the unit.

Speaking from my personal experience. I would skip the casing.

It takes a lot of trial and error to perfect the proper conditions for casing stages, and the difference will be very negligible.

I've done with and without various times, and I've decided that the hassle of casing just isn't worth it for me.

True, you do not need a casing layer in order to fruit cubes, maybe skipping it would be a wise choice, less chance of failure.

You are boiling the water,  water boils at 220f.  If you heat it on high the entire time it still won't go over 220f unless you evaporate all the water.  So heat on high until pressure is up and then reduce heat to maintain pressure.

As the jiggler jiggles, it releases heat, pressure, and moisture. All of which you want to retain.
So use the lowest setting that maintains full pressure and temperature.

yeah makes sense. mine has a cool switch that you can set to release steam or retain as much as possible so i just keep it on the latter

That's like flooring your car's accelerator and then using the brake to control your speed.

1.5" sub is thin for cubes 3" is good some people go as thick as 5".  For 6qt shoe box tubs I do 4" and make it a double tub.
Don't mist or even open the tub until 100% colonized.

and usually i cut it down to 7.5 (my stove uses 1-10 on incrememnts of .1)so just keep steam coming out or try to keep it just under the temp that it lets out steam at?

good lookin out. everybody should listen to doc, i've made a habbit of doing so and it works out pretty good.
