Recent evidence has shown that all my 5 year old syringes were viable while my 5 year old prints did not germinate.

How were they stored?

Several syringes were purchased from a vendor, and some were used to fruit two months later (other syringes of the same batch were saved unused). The fruit of that inoculation were printed, added to the collection. Several other strains were collected from buddies/spore exchanges, also added to storage. My inventory was 3 unused syringes, 4 prints (two prints being from the spores in the syringes).

5 years later: Syringes straight to rye showed vigorous, healthy, rhizomorphic growth. Print spores suspended in water dropped onto rye showed no visible growth (two prints were tested, and two syringes). By the time the syringed jars were at 100% colonization (9 days), there was no visible growth in the print-jars (after 13 days).

The prints and syringes were stored together in the same small priority mail box in plastic bags. The box traveled through several moves and went from being refrigerated to room temperature several times (probably 3 years in the fridge, 2 years at RT).

At the time, I did not know about rehydrating spores, so this could have been a factor. Still, I thought that not properly re-hydrating them would only make them take longer to germinate, not stall them completely. Either way, there seemed to be no perceivable lag on the syringes. They seem to be the way to go for storage.
