Contemporary Contributions in Sociology
    #11680162 - 12/19/09 11:08 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I have to write a paper on the following:

"Cite what you consider to be 2 important contemporary contributions to the general field of sociology"

I've read a lot of sociology material. The theories that come to mind all seem to be kind of old though.

My question is what exactly is a "contemporary" contribution? Would Merton's study on deviance or Domhoff William's study on the power elite be considered contemporary or am I going to have to go into current academic sociology journals to find something?

We can't answer certainly because we don't know your teacher and haven't seen their instructions.

However I assume it's more generally modern, as in current sociology. So any active theorists or researchers that have published books in the past few years and whose texts are taught or discussed at undergraduate level should be fine.

Thanks. This isn't for a class, but is part of the admission process for a school. I agree, it probably is looking for studies in the past 10 years or so. Just seeing if there was some sort of academic world consensus on the implication of the term "contemporary"

As long as I can defend my choice of theorist, I feel safe
AKA I'm comfortable enough in my understanding of contemporary that should I choose an older theorist, as long as they are the most modern thought on a topic, I would defend my choice.

Basically by saying, 'point me to a more contemporary theorist on this topic...'
If no such person exists, well, what argument is there to oppose my choice?
Some theories haven't been touched in a while

Good points. Well the two I mentioned above are two of the studies that I find highly interesting/important in society. I feel Merton (Deviance) and Williams (power elite) are kind of like the godfathers of those studies, while modern scholars have added to and/or critiqued them through case studies and stuff. I'm thinking it would be more appropriate to cite the godfathers rather than people who have done current works based on the fundamental theories that have already been established.

I'd say Merton's theory of deviance, and Domhoff Williams' on the power elite are still highly influential and discussed right?

This is for a sociology of education program at Steinhardt

I don't know what the researchers and teachers are doing at that school but I think it's a good idea to write about what you know as long as it fits the assignment; something you like, like what you suggested. I'm thinking it's good to work with your strong side and area of interest.
