They look like old Hericium erinaceus or Lion's mane.

You've got Lion's mane! A great smelling and tasting mushroom! Those look old though, I wouldn't eat them. Take some culture from it, it's great and easy to grow!

sometimes old ones get a little bitter, taste a small piece before you cook it to see if it's OK

Noobie, in your hericium log, did you buy the culture? If you grow this wild one, please make a log also, or at least say if it's harder to grow then domesticated one. It is a very rare mushroom. My father found one about a month ago, and I was really impressed with it's smell. I was an idiot and I didn't take a tissue sample, though. Actually I didn't know then what to do with it. But there's always next year, right?

Well, quite. In Europe, at least. My father has been studying mushrooms for 30 years, and he's only seen it twice. And all the books I've read also say it is very rare. When he brought it home, we had no idea what it is, and only after a few weeks (when it was already thrashed) I realized from here that it is easy to grow. Btw, to me, their smell is the most mushroomy smell I've ever felt, as you said, so pure and perfect. But you did take a sample before you threw them, didn't you?

Well, my advice is, just to be sure, take a sample from the middle of the mushroom, it will still be good. You might never find it again, even on the same tree. I think this is almost a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
