Just ordered a new Desktop PC...

I've been meaning to get a new computer for a few months now. I was tired of waiting and this was somewhat of an impulse by.
I needed the wireless card and TV tuner... so I took like 75$ off the price in my head. And no way in hell was I going to get a vista system.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113110&cm_re=gateway_desktop-_-83-113-110-_-Product
Think this rig is worth 700?

Overall I'de say it's a good value. Really good stats for the most part, and good accessories, plus if you don't know alot about computers you have Gateway there to back you up. If you do however I always recommend going the build your own computer route. The only thing which might slow it down is the Hard Drive, yes it is 1 terrabyte which is huge, but it is only 5400 rpm, which means the speed at which information can be read off of it is so/so. That shouldn't really stop you though, hard drives are a dime a dozen, you could always replace it if you wanted more speed, but you might be sacrificing in capacity a bit.

Yea I did notice that as well... of all places to cut corners right? lol
I used to build all my computers in the past, I've built four of them. However, I've noticed you really don't save much nowadays. I did a shopping cart built and the system I wanted, would have cost me around $900. And I no longer have access to my free software... Windows 7 is something like 80 bucks :/.
The technology is moving so quick nowadays. 8 gigs of RAM seems like overkill to me. The video card is only 128 bit, but the 1TB of VRAM is good I guess. Are there really even any games out there that could bottleneck this system?

looks good for a home computer.
the HD honestly isnt a huge issue at 5400 RPM. most laptops are 5400.
the only reason i still build mine is because i know exactly what goes into it. i know some dell stuff has proprietary power supplies and im sure some other parts as well.
no reason not to have standard parts.

My dad just got a new computer, pretty much state of the art, and he's really into gaming. He would say definitely yes to your question. There are always tweaks you can do to the games graphics settings which will push it beyond the capability of the computer, however, most of these tweaks are highly unnessacary for normal play of the game, and I would think you would be able to play just about any game at great quality graphics with the card you are getting.

That graphics card is terrible. Although you do have the 1GB version... so I guess you'd get probably a few more fps (and I do mean <5) than the one on this site: http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gt-220-review-test/6

Get this and stick in a decent 7200rpm 1.5TB disk, or get one with a nice and fast disk in the first place. Either way, you don't want a slow disk in such a system. It doesn't make sense, as it reduces the performance of the component that is already the weak link in the performance chain. You are bound to notice it.

Not really... I mean I can't see how this can be that horrible for gaming when I've been gaming fine on a laptop that has 4 years old outdated technology?
I'll see if the case has room and possibly throw in like a 200 gig faster HD. If I just install my few games (probably cs 1.6, DoD Source, Dragon Age Origins, Star Craft II) to that HD, will this improve their performance?

That may help a little (with loading times), but what that computer mostly lacks for gaming is a decent graphics card.

It's almost 2010. Then it will be 2011. DDR2 will probably be close to obsolete in about 6 months. When they release DDR5 or whatever the fuck. DDR3 is NOW the standard on everything that comes out, it's faster. That means in a few months DDR2 will be harder to find and more expensive. And DDR4 will be the new standard. Best to be ahead of the curve then way behind it, especially from a gaming perspective.

Yeah, but he can easily upgrade to DDR3 when DDR2 stops selling on the market, which should be around 2015. Till then, for $700, you can't expect too much.
Also, newegg don't do returns on computers.
And why think from a gaming perspective, if he's not a gamer? :P I see where you're going though.

Well he mentioned gaming (Starcraft2) etc. Which comes out in 2010. And will most certainly have some good graphics requirements. I don't think you'd notice a massive difference in DDR2 vs DDR3 unless you are benchmarking or something... But still I think it's better to be ahead of the curve than behind it. Yeah you can always upgrade later, and for cheaper usually. But DDR2 is dying..they are just trying to sell off all the old systems with it. If he looked I'm sure he could find a similar system with DDR3 memory for about the same price. For something like that, I would find the best possible computer I could find for about that price, but one with a shitty graphics card, then just upgrade that yourself manually.
Or save some money and build it yourself

I've found you save a lot of money and get more bang for the buck not buying the "top of the line." Would you say 4gig of DDR3 is better than 8gig of DDR2?

almost $800 for a non i7 system???
you need to build your own, then you know you have quality parts to start with, and then you can get the parts you want.
as for gaming your either a hardcore gamer or your not, since you been using a laptop for gaming i don't really consider you a hardcore gamer so it really doesn't matter what card you get. blizzard games are not know for graphics, they catter to everyone, so nomatter what you get you'll be able to play SCII...within reason of course, they still make basic "graphics cards" that really shouldn't be called such. but if you've built 4 computers then you should have a good idea what cards would cut it.
but if you wanna play hardcore games of tomorrow, then you buy a i7 or blackedition amd system today, with an ATI graphics card that supports DX11
you sound like you wanna save money so get an AMD system, this is a no brainer here...as for Ram you don't need DDR3 so don't worry about it. you should be able to build an amd system for around $500 or even less. videocards are still your golden ticket to gaming, and if your biggest worry is SCII, you should be able to build a really cheap system and be happy.
as for the hard drive, thats exactly why you build your own system, how are you going to save money when your going to be replacing shit immediatly? as for windows 7....not needed unless your a hardcore gamer, so stick to windows XP

Well of course that statement I made is completely opinion and it depends of your priorities. If your priority is cost over high end performance, then yeah. As for is 4GB DDR3 better than 8GB of DDR2? Well depends on the timings, but I'd say.. maybe? Especially since you probably wont even be able to use all 8GB of that DDR2 unless you're doing some intense video editing or something, no game or normal application is going to eat that much RAM. Although 8GB is nice for Vista 64, leave plenty of breathing room. By the time games require 8GB, DDR3 will be the baseline mandatory and DDR2 will be crapsolete.
It's totally your call though. You'd be fine with either one. One would just be easier to upgrade in the future. You could just pop in 4GB more GB of DDR3 when its cheaper. But that's just RAM, biggest thing I would worry about is the video card.

Yea, I figure this system will suffice for now. If I end up getting bottlenecked down the road I suppose I have a PC Express 16x 2.0 slot which will give me the best options in cards.

i love PC gaming.
my problem with it is that it is a hell of a lot more expensive than console. youve got $60 games and if you want to play most new games at a decent frame rate you have to get a new video card once every year or so. a video card alone can be as much as a new console. i just dont have the cash to be able to keep up.
if i could use a keyboard and a mouse with a console it would be perfect. until then, console.

I can do ANYTHING on my PC. I can play console games on it. You can't play PC games on a console. I can hook up an N64/PS/whatever controller to my PC, can't hook a keyboard and mouse into a console. You can't play Starcraft2/Diablo/all the badass PC games on console. Personally I think consoles these days are a huge waste of money. Buy a console that ONLY plays its own console games.. or buy a PC that does.... well.. everything?

Yea... You buy a console for $400 and can only play games for that specific system which run 50-60$ each.
You buy a PC for everything! And it's not like you can live without a PC nowadays anyway. IMO, all of the legit games are on PC. You have so much more options on the PC. Games are cheaper (~$40). Keyboard and mouse > any controller.
The only advantage I see console having is multiplayer with real life friends.

cosmo, DDR3 clocks at 1066mhz/1333mhz and DDR2 clocks at 800mhz/566mhz. You prob have 800mhz, so in that case 8GB DDR2 is better than 4GB DDR3 like you asked.
and you can play multiplayer on PC with REAL friends too, they do it all the time at LAN parties.

A brand new high end custom built pc should last you a good 8 years with just upgrades (though of course will not be powerful after 3-4 years I will still carry on).

It's a pretty decent rig, but I don't see why you didn't just build it yourself. It's really not hard to do, and you could have spec'ed all those parts from Newegg for less. Personally I need a nice mouse and keyboard, makes the experience so much better.
And 24"+ monitor is necessary nowadays - they're not even expensive.

'upgrading' to DDR3 later will mean replacing the memory and the motherboard. i just built a system myself and i decided it was worth the extra money to buy into DDR3. No point getting a new system with outdated tech now that DDR3 is standard.

But I ASSUME if he got a $700 gateway, he wasn't expecting a gaming machine. Safe to assume, yes?

I don't understand why there is all this talk about ram and games.
Even with the latest games, the ram usage is probably the least likely thing to bottleneck a game. 4 GBs of 800mhz ram is definitely enough for any game right now (unless you're using Vista )
Honestly, next time you're gonna play a game, open up your task manager and go to the ram usage. Play for a while then come out and look at it. I think you'll be surprised.
Also, DDR2 has been going up in price for probably the last 6 months - 1 year. I remember when you could get 4GBs for like 40 or 50 bucks.

I have real life friends on Steam. Whenever people all want to play a game we start one up. Everyone has mics too... it's pretty damn awesome. Especially with L4D2, since it requires tactics and coordination (in VS and Scavenge at least) unlike I've seen in any other game. It's a damn good time.

Hell yea man. I spent all of High School venting with my RL friends playing WoW, CS, various RTS games.
I'm just saying if you have a few friends over to pregame the bar or something, consoles can be fun and more versatile than PCs.

Just curious, why don't you build your own?
Price? Lazy?

Mainly the price... I have a month off from school and I really enjoy doing builds. I priced out the components of the system - I don't think it would have saved me any money if I take software into account.

thats because your not taking quality into account, if you buy the cheapest crap you'd come in way cheaper than the prebuild, which is most likely whats used in the prebuild. the only quality parts will most likely be the CPU because you can't really cheap out on that.
