Is My Tray Unhealthy Or Overlayed? Not Sure Help Please!
    #11673250 - 12/18/09 03:35 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Overlay is a term that refers to the condition which can occur to an overly colonized casing layer. A casing layer which has approached 100% visible colonization (=the casing layer is becoming completely white from the mycelium growing on it) risks overlay.

Overlay occurs if one or several of the factors play together:

    * carbon dioxide levels are too high ( = too little air exchange)
    * casing surface is too dry
    * the relative humidity of the air is too low
    * the temperature in the fruiting chamber is too high

The condition when the fine strands of mycelia die and become hard and matted (as compared to the light, strandy mycelia you will become familiar with.) is called stroma. Overlay is often bright white, since it has become so matted and impenetrable. Mushrooms will not grow directly from a section having stroma, as the mycelia layer is dead on top, and cannot be penetrated from below. Touching stroma (it's generally not a good idea to touch casings) - it literally feels like it is one solid piece, as compared to the much more pliant healthy mycelia.

Just wondered if what I have in my tray is Overlay, it has been in fruiting chamber for over a week now. Tried using wax paper to help initiate pinning . My RH is always above 90 percent and i have been fanning at least 8 times a day.

Hope someone can give me hints here   thanks  :geicogecko:

In my noobish opinion it's looking fine, they look like fluffs of mycelium and not a solid layer.  Also you got small points of the casing that are still visible, i'm not sure if this is a good indication.

This is what I understood from a thread RR posted in about FAE:

Just make sure of FAE as it is the most important pinning trigger, it just doesn't mean changing CO2 for oxygen. You really need to get that oxygen to penetrate the casing layer to initiate pinning.  After misting, fan, the FAE + evaporation (the wetting-drying-wetting-drying process) will be a major pinning trigger as it simulates perfect fruiting conditions.  Of course keep humidity really high before pins and don't let your substrate dry out, and temperatures in the 70's for non-vegetative growth during fruiting of mycelium that will cause overlay.

I can see that you have a nice misted casing.

GL and show us when it pins! Please!

8 (days) is the magic number for pins to show... but if you have been waiting over 15 days, then you can start to worry.

Peace!

Thanks for the reply and the RR post   Im just being paranoid i think it isnt a hard casing of myc just isnt doing alot at moment been waiting and waiting

I fan before and then after misting. Maybe i am fanning too much and the loss of RH is not helping or they are just not reading to grow up yet!!  :geicogecko:  :picard:

Take in consideration that I'm no trusted cultivator! I also have my doubts... and I'm on my first grow, but recently I made a post on my 2 bulk trays asking if they were ok.

In that same post I got sent to an RR post concerning FAE and pinning triggers.

I recommend you read that thread post.

I think we might fruit at the same time! (I just hope i fruit)...
