50/50 WBS Success, and RR's Grain Tek.

Greetings,
So far I've been erring on the side of my WBS being too dry after soaking/simmering with a 50/50 success rate.
I decided to go back to square one, and watched the chapter on grain in RR's awesome DvD again, and noticed I was simmering for 20 minutes, but the video says to boil for ten.
I just boiled a batch of WBS for ten as suggested, and while I don't see a whole lot of burst WBS, after I drained them I noticed my fingers were super slimy feeling in comparison to the usual feel.
Perhaps I need to start over?
Any feedback is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Sondor

slimy means you didn't rinse well enough, which means your seed will clump.
wbs is notoriously dirty. you need to rinse and rinse and rinse.
for example, rye is not as dirty, and i rinse it 3-4 times before the water is even semi-clear.

There's no rinse after the boil. WBS doesn't need to cook as long as rye, but if it didn't split, you're ok. Jar it up and PC. Do you use gypsum? Coffee? Special lids?

you are right, there is no rinse after the boil.
but if it's slimy, then he didnt rinse enough BEFORE the boil, meaning success is a crapshoot.

Nah. Final texture may not be perfect, but if it gets PCed properly, it'll colonize 100%.

Greetings,
Thanks for the responses, and I have to say I'm a rinsing maniac. In the past I even rinsed after the simmer, but this time I did not.
No, I didn't use gypsum, but thought I've seen enough posts saying it wasn't necessary to the point I believed it.
Lids are standard polyfil. 3/8's" hole. New lids have injection port (gasket sealant)and polyfil port.
...I just tested it again, and it really feels slimy.
I'm just feeling so lost after following the RR Tek so closely and not getting awesome results.
BTW, the WBS is Kaytee Supreme.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Sondor

With cracked corn? Yeah, that'll be slimy and sticky. I don't like Kaytee much, but it will colonize ok. PITA to spawn.

I used it 'cause it had a super low sunflower seed content. Is there another type you recommend?
Leave it to Doc_T to get to the bottom of it!

Pennington's. Scoop the sunflower (there won't be much) off when you rinse the grains initially, throw it out for squirrels.

Greetings,
Awesome, will check out Pennington's.
So far the G2G has gone really well (90% colonized w/ a 90% success rate), and I'm birthing my first BRF cakes (wow, that took forever!) and attempting a grain LC.
Like a wise man on these forumns once said, the way to survive the patience this hobby requires is to stay busy!
Sincerely,
