cultivating clitocybe species?
    #11670193 - 12/17/09 07:22 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone tried growing clitocybe species?  I found some clitocybe gibba and am waiting to see if the clones I made will take (having a lot of trouble with a new agar source, the gelling is very unreliable).  If the plates take, or if I find more later and those plates take, I'm excited.  My ID books claim that it's a saprophyte on pine and pine needles, which is one of the dominant species on my land.

Anyone grown anything in this genus?

I just inoculated a couple of jars with a wood blewit culture.  Growth is slow but looking good so far.  I also find hundreds of Clitocybe tarda mushrooms around in the spring after a heavy rain, but I haven't tried them.  They smell funky.  (But in a good way!)

Where did you get the culture?  I found a wild one, but it was too old to get a viable culture (just crazy bacterial contams and no rebound).

I ordered it from a vendor in Canada.  Ironically enough, I found a couple of dozen fresh blewits today after work!

I also cut the inside of a knuckle while trimming off stem butts.  I wonder if the blood will appease the great Mushroom Spirit and make them grow when I put them on cardboard tomorrow morning.

This species is an aggressive hunter of nematode worms.

Maybe it is unhappy without live food.

I've been trying for a while to get Microworms (panagrellus) or walter worms that they culture for raising tropical fish, and folks here were talking about predatory nematodes against gnats.

I think any of 'em would work.

It's something I'll be trying in the future for certain species.

Ha!  Well, I'd love to get a clone off of those locals if they take.

Here are a couple of pics of the growth I've gotten from the stem butts after three days.  Once the mycelium really starts racing across the cardboard I'll take some cultures.

The rest of the mushrooms got eaten!  I'm going to throw the leftover stems and the older caps I took prints from in the blender and puree them with some water, an pour the goop over my compost pile.  Some guy made a video on the Youtube about this:
