Quick question about the "RTV Port" lid design

The tek I'm following suggests 4 1/16" holes surrounding a 1/5" hole drilled into jar lids, with the larger hole being filled with JB Weld as a self-healing RTV port. My question is whether to cover the smaller holes with micropore tape previous to pressure cooking. I'm not sure if the holes will still provide enough gas exchange when covered by the tape, or if the tape will withstand the temperature of the PC. Any advice is appreciated..

I placed the mircro tape over the holes before PCing but it turns brown and has no stick left so it just rubs off and I have to put new tape over it again. I just put foil over the jar lid and then after it cools I put the micro tape on while the jars are in a dead air box. I don't think you have to put all those holes in. One for the resealable hole and one for gas exchange. I don't know about using JB weld. Doesn't that get hard as hell. Silicone is the way you want to go bro...and most will work. I use the one at Lowe's. Its white and comes in a small tube. I bought some clear stuff that works fine but stinks like hell. One last point. Spray some Pam or cooking spray, maybe even vegi oil would work on the surface you intend to lay your lids to apply the silicone. Then I take small squares of wax paper and spray some Pam on a paper towel and smear it on the little squares to put on top to smooth the surface of the resealable port. By doing the pam you get nice smooth surfaces that wont harbor spots for bacteria and spores you don't want. Hope this helps. Myc

Here's the link-> monstermitch's Grain Jar Lid Tek I already drilled the holes.. The tek says to drill the small ones 1/16", but the ones i drilled might even be a little bigger. I do have silicone, I'm just a stoner and thought it was jb weld..

Oh, you aren't going to put tape on that at all. Tyvek is the top layer, you shoot through the tyvek and the RTV. You can use squares of tyvek or cut little circles, works either way. No tape needed.
I've got some in my PC like that right this very moment.

Check out the half pint lids I made up. Same holes drilled (4 small ones, pf tek style and a larger one in the middle. Cut out little circles in the tyvek that line up with the center hole.

Now you don't have to worry about putting a hole in your filter.

Noobie, I've actually found my homemade injection ports withstand repeated injections much better than the blue injection ports.
The ones I have used, I end up filling the "chamber" with silicone anyway. Maybe it's because the ones I used were old (unused, but old).

you know i just took the lids off some of my jars and spawned them to straw and inside every damn port there was birdseed so i filled them as well, that will stop the seed from getting in there and maybe prolong the life of the ports
i found they last about 25 punctures before needing replaced and i use mostly agar to grain for my inoculations but they come in handy if i need to use LC

Remember the double injection port lids I made?
Well, when I injected through the port with a 16g needle, 1 time, it didn't reseal and I could hear it sucking in air.
Anyways, I PC'ed some lids and replaced them in the GB, everything is fine, no contams and growth exploded. Not that this has anything to do with the thread at hand.
